He (just like McCain) are against calling it "marriage"; for preserving the simple definition and integrity of the word.
They are both for civil unions and the rights afforded to any other couple.

I oppose marriage in general, gay or straight.sponger wrote:...because even most liberals oppose it."I'm not present, I'm a drug that makes you dream"0 -
I have a feeling that if it were up to him, he would support it but it is all political. (nothing to base that on, just the way he thinks)
I think there are a lot of things where he has moved to the center in an honest effort to represent the most number of people and find a balance.0 -

Marriage is a joke. It's pathetic to see people trying to protect its "traditional" meaning.0 -

I know John McCain is against gay marraige, did he comment in any of the debates about the "sanctity of marraige"?
To me, if you have beed married and got a divorce, you really have no right talking about the "sanctity of marraige" ... so, I hope McCain really hasn't pulled that card out, if so, it's quite hypocritical.
Sponger has it right ... there is no true "sanctity of marriage" anymore ... it's a shame. But what ... a third, half, what percentage of marraiges end up in divorce? It's a lot.
As I heard some comedian say (paraphrasing) .... "man, if the gay folks want to have the right to be married, why not let them be just as miserable as the rest of us?"
(hope my girlfriend doesn't read this ...

don't get me wrong, not all divorces are wrong ... some people do deserve better and are MUCH better off ...
I just think holding marraiges up on this imaginary pedistal is pretty silly.

I agree with you....why should the politicians hold marriage to this standard when the Married couples don't."I'm not present, I'm a drug that makes you dream"0 -

The problem here is that as usual it all starts with a religious point of view...
God said that marriage is between man and woman. So therefore it must be true and that's the way we should all live even if we don't believe in God
Because regardless of what they say that's the root of the definition of marriage and in my opinion that's what makes the separation of state and religion so pathetically hypocritical..."Without the album covers, where do you clean your pot?" - EV0 -

and reveling in it's loyalty. It's made by forming coalitions

He's not against gay marriage. He is punting to the states rights argument, which is basically what McCain said too. It's a way to support the gay marriage movement as it spreads from CA and beyond without sacrificing any political points. There is no need for him to stick his neck out -- let the states decide.
On a personal level, I am sure he supports it.San Diego 10/25/00, Mountain View 6/1/03, Santa Barbara 10/28/03, Northwest School 3/18/05, San Diego 7/7/06, Los Angeles 7/9/06, 7/10/06, Honolulu (U2) 12/9/06, Santa Barbara (EV) 4/10/08, Los Angeles (EV) 4/12/08, Hartford 6/27/08, Mansfield 6/28/08, VH1 Rock Honors The Who 7/12/08, Seattle 9/21/09, Universal City 9/30/09, 10/1/09, 10/6/09, 10/7/09, San Diego 10/9/09, Los Angeles (EV) 7/8/11, Santa Barbara (EV) 7/9/11, Chicago 7/19/13, San Diego 11/21/13, Los Angeles 11/23/13, 11/24/13, Oakland 11/26/13, Chicago 8/22/16, Missoula 8/13/18, Boston 9/2/18, Los Angeles 2/25/22 (EV), San Diego 5/3/22, Los Angeles 5/6/22, 5/7/22, Imola 6/25/22, Los Angeles 5/21/24, Boston 9/15/24, Ohanafest 2025 (EV)0 -
Because he's being a little gutless on the issue, although it's probably one of the more divisive issues you can find in politics. The argument for civil unions makes little sense to me; "we will grant you all the benefits of marriage, but we're not going to actually call it marriage." Huh?0

I think that is a diplomatic way to give a nod to the people who want it to be only man/woman, while helping others still get the legal benefits normally accorded to married people.R.i.p. Rigoberto Alpizar.

to me, it's a tad gutless, but honestly, why chance the an election bringing this up? Why risk discussing this issue which is a no win situation? Same way McCain feels. Especially knowing the economy is so much more important to voters right now.
I think most people that read the issue understand what Obama's really saying (essentially,he's not going to stand in anyone's way) ... but, there is just no point in calling out support for gay marraige during an election ... or else, you'll look like McCain did in tht clip that was posted."You're one of the few Red Sox fans I don't mind." - Newch91

but he told us before we could always count on the fact that if he voted for something it meant he strongly believes it...are you saying this is no longer true?
