Perhaps this is due to Republicans not living in reality. Or the fact that denial is second nature for them. Or maybe, just maybe they're flat out lying.

Whatever the reason is, this means nothing at all. But thanks anyway.

hey, here's an idea - maybe it means just what it says

no that couldn't be! the republicans got together, lied on a gallup poll to make the dems look like the crazies they are.

look at you - can't be just a simple poll, oh no, ALL republicans are in denial...hehehehe

    all liars...ahahhaha

i can see why the poll turned out the way it did - the gloom and doomers have their heads so far up their asses, they couldn't see a ray of sunshine if they wanted to.

The Repubs don't even need to get together to lie- that's just what they do. But mainly, it's only a poll. It means nothing. Show me a scientific study of some sort and then we'll talk.

Maybe the doom and gloomers are simply reacting to the state that the US finds itself in these days. Maybe that would make too much sense though, so nevermind.

    Did you read this part?
"Republicans are significantly more likely than Democrats or independents to rate THEIR mental health as excellent, according to data from the last four November Gallup Health and Healthcare polls. Fifty-eight percent of Republicans REPORT having excellent mental health, compared to 43% of independents and 38% of Democrats."
    ...
This was not based upon any actual testing of mental health... the data simply states when asked, Republicans are more likely to say, "Yup... mine mental health is a kick mental health".
    ...
I guess the moral of the story is: If you believe everything everyone says about themselves... you have excellent mental health.

"Correlation is NO PROOF of causation, of course. The reason the relationship exists between being a Republican and more positive mental health is unknown, and one cannot say whether something about being a Republican causes a person to be more mentally healthy, or whether something about being mentally healthy causes a person to choose to become a Republican (or whether some third variable is responsible for causing both to be parallel)."

my guess is it had to do with attitudes. simpletons have excellent mental health. it is easy to be perfectly happy when the world is totally black and white and there is no need for grey or doubt. this kind of thinking is the same as that espoused by the republicans. we're good, we know we're good, we know god thinks we're good, and we never make mistakes. the rest of you are all fucked up and evil. period. i will hear no evidence to the contrary.

much easier on mental health than having to worry or consider how one's own actions might affect others.

personally, i think being distressed over the possibility of the homos next door getting the benefits of legal unions shows much more mental illness than distress over the injustice of the rich vs. the poor in this country.

If they wanted to get a clear picture of mental capacities based upon political party affiliation... they should have done some controlled testing. But, that costs money... a hell of a lot more than a simple poll asking the people polled whether THEY believed THEMSELVES to be in good mental health.
    Case in point:
    Question - MrBrian:
"Where do you rate your own mental health"?
    ----
    Answer - 810wmb:
    "most excellent, dude"
    ...
There is no data, other than the respondant's, about his actual mental health.
I would have responded... "I don't know... how can you tell?"

I'm a registered republican and I can say, without a doubt, that the last 7 years have left my head spinning.
"Worse than traitors in arms are the men who pretend loyalty to the flag, feast and fatten on the misfortunes of the nation while patriotic blood is crimsoning the plains." -- Abraham Lincoln
  • maybe the fact that all democrats have been beating our heads against the wall for the last 7 years trying to understand how the hell a devil like george w is running our country HAS effected our mental health.

That subject isn't what the poll results showed. Of the percentage of people who rated themselves in the "poor" category, independents rated the highest.

Maybe the reason why that is... is because Independents are INDEPENDENT and actually put some thought into their responses and decisions. Maybe they are less likely to follow the scripted doctrine of a political party and vote for either candidate, based upon the person who is less likely to screw up our country, rather than simply looking for the (D) or (R) next to the name that instructs them whom they are supposed to vote for. And maybe more likely to give a more accurate response to a poll where self-assessment is the criteria. But, I don't know for sure.
    ...
    Case in point:
I am confident in saying, that had Gore been President... and all of the same events occurred... and Gore made all the same speeches and decisions as President Bush... the people defending Bush would be saying the SAME THINGS as the Bush detractors are saying today. And yes, there would be those people whom criticise President Bush today, coming to Gore's defense... all simply based upon party affiliation. Does anyone really believe people like Bill O'Rilley, Sean Hannity, Ann Coulter and the people in here would be supporting a President Gore? A Nancy Pelosi or Hillary Clinton critisizing a President Gore?
NO!!! If you believe that... you really need to wake-up and come back to Planet Earth.
But, I know... myself... I would be railling the same rants if it were Gore who got us into this mess. Hell, I'd be railling on President Vedder if he did the same thing!
    ...
Am I an Independent? No, I am a Republican... middle of the road... maybe slightly left leaning... today. But, I have voted the candidate in the past, regardless of political party, and am proud to say I have never voted for this President Bush.
I hate how this nation has been divided along political lines... the worst dividing line I can imagine (other than religious). Politics is NOT a sport and no one wins as long as we consider the opposite political party, or person with an opposing point of view, as the enemy.

The thread is mistitled. It is republicans that has excellent, while indep and democrats have only good /slightly excellent mental health. And, as many have pointed out already, it is based on asking people directly to rate their own mental health. So republicans tend to be people who say their mental health is excellent, or vice versa.

Interesting, I suppose, but pretty empty of rhetoric value the way it was put and misrepresented here.

    Peace

i am sure even gallup realizes self reporting of mental health status is worthless...
