To whom do you donate?

The "wealthy/charity" thread got me thinking. I was always going to donate a lot of money once I got on my feet. I am now on my feet and it is time for me to start giving more back. I currently donate somewhere around that 1%, but need to bring it toward 10%.

So to whom do you give? I tend to give one-time to things I become aware of and things that friends and families collect for (such as diseases, etc.)

So here is your chance. Tell me (and others) some causes you give money to. I am looking for ideas.
I cannot come up with a new sig till I get this egg off my face.

    I also have did a lot of fund raising (car washes, bake sales etc.) through work for the March Of Dimes and the American Cancer Society.

    These are a few...I like to spread it out. I always see something else that sounds good. There's this other charity that helps by giving people in poorer nations loans to start their own business that I gave to last year...I can't recall the name right now but I thought it was a wonderful idea. I'll look it up.

    I also think that people don't like to brag about these things and bring them up all the time. People do these things because they care not because they want to look good.

    There are rankings for charities that show what percent of donations actually go to the cause, as opposed to overhead, salaries, etc.

    Trust me... the most fulfilling feeling you can feel is seeing the faces of someone who has been lifted from depths that you and I can probably never imagine. I mean, I have never been homeless... slept in parks or on bus stop benches... been told I have cancer. Seeing the faces of the family moving into their first home... a stranger facing cancer, but posesses the strength to walk 60 miles... it's really amazing.
    And the whole beach thing... the ocean has provided me with a lifetime of memories. I just want the next generation and the ones after them to get a little of what I have gotten.
    And yeah... you get a little sore schleping luggage and setting up hundreds of tents for people with blisters on their feet... or picking up trash and paper cups from the sand... but, it's well worth it. I still wish they'd let me paint the walls or do some of the carpentery work... but still, someone needs to sweep up and empty the trash cans, right?

    Kiva I've given quite a bit to this group this year. Through their site you can lend money to individuals in developing nations so that they can start or expand businesses. When the loans are paid back, you can re-lend the money to someone else, so it is literally a gift that keeps on giving.

    I donate locally. I volunteer my accounting services at our local animal shelter and monetarily as well. I used to donate to other national charities but got so many "begging" telephone calls that I finally quit. We even quit answering our phone for a few years-just let the answering machine pick up. :D

    I donate to the Wildlife Conservation Society, Amnesty International, and the Surf Rider Foundation. I also volunteer at the Miele Foundation and Gamblers Anonymous. My volunteer work with Gamblers Anonymous mainly consists of speaking engagements and taking calls on our 1 800 number. At the Miele Foundation I mentor under-privileged kids.
