To whom do you donate?

The "wealthy/charity" thread got me thinking. I was always going to donate a lot of money once I got on my feet. I am now on my feet and it is time for me to start giving more back. I currently donate somewhere around that 1%, but need to bring it toward 10%.

So to whom do you give? I tend to give one-time to things I become aware of and things that friends and families collect for (such as diseases, etc.)

So here is your chance. Tell me (and others) some causes you give money to. I am looking for ideas.
I cannot come up with a new sig till I get this egg off my face.

    Unicef
DoSomething.org (you can find all kinds of stuff here)
    Defenders of Wildlife

    Southern Center for Human Rights

I also have did a lot of fund raising (car washes, bake sales etc.) through work for the March Of Dimes and the American Cancer Society.

These are a few...I like to spread it out. I always see something else that sounds good. There's this other charity that helps by giving people in poorer nations loans to start their own business that I gave to last year...I can't recall the name right now but I thought it was a wonderful idea. I'll look it up.

Edit: found it and it's a good one.

and to local institutions here in Buenos Aires, mostly related to children, the disabled and the eldest...
  • I also think that people don't like to brag about these things and bring them up all the time. People do these things because they care not because they want to look good.

I'm not saying that's where this thread is going. I'm just speaking generally.

There are rankings for charities that show what percent of donations actually go to the cause, as opposed to overhead, salaries, etc.

Cosmo - Very impressive with the volunteering. I feel I'm being put to shame by some on the board on this front. I think it's giving the kick in the pants required to get my ass out there and give my time as well. Thanks and kudos to you and all those donating their time especially.

Trust me... the most fulfilling feeling you can feel is seeing the faces of someone who has been lifted from depths that you and I can probably never imagine. I mean, I have never been homeless... slept in parks or on bus stop benches... been told I have cancer. Seeing the faces of the family moving into their first home... a stranger facing cancer, but posesses the strength to walk 60 miles... it's really amazing.
And the whole beach thing... the ocean has provided me with a lifetime of memories. I just want the next generation and the ones after them to get a little of what I have gotten.
And yeah... you get a little sore schleping luggage and setting up hundreds of tents for people with blisters on their feet... or picking up trash and paper cups from the sand... but, it's well worth it. I still wish they'd let me paint the walls or do some of the carpentery work... but still, someone needs to sweep up and empty the trash cans, right?

Kiva I've given quite a bit to this group this year. Through their site you can lend money to individuals in developing nations so that they can start or expand businesses. When the loans are paid back, you can re-lend the money to someone else, so it is literally a gift that keeps on giving.

In addition to local charities (primarily a hunger center and the rape crisis center), these are some of my other favorites:

    The Innocence Project

    The Elephant Sanctuary

    Doctors Without Borders

    Save Darfur

I donate locally. I volunteer my accounting services at our local animal shelter and monetarily as well. I used to donate to other national charities but got so many "begging" telephone calls that I finally quit. We even quit answering our phone for a few years-just let the answering machine pick up. :D

I do donate to other causes as well, but mostly animal and environmental related. :)

I have $$ taken from my paycheck all year for eash of these.

I subscribe to NPR via my local station and also Channel 13.

I'm saving up to send $$ to Operation Smile on behalf of my two healthy, perfect sons. It costs $240 to pay for one child's operation to repair a cleft palate/lip. That's my goal.

I donate to the Wildlife Conservation Society, Amnesty International, and the Surf Rider Foundation. I also volunteer at the Miele Foundation and Gamblers Anonymous. My volunteer work with Gamblers Anonymous mainly consists of speaking engagements and taking calls on our 1 800 number. At the Miele Foundation I mentor under-privileged kids.

As Abook said, some people do not like to talk about their charities, but I'll mention one that I volunteer at that I've mentioned before.

I volunteer 6 weekends a year (which isn't much) at a local organization which takes in donations of clothes and household goods and then distributes them to poor people. It's kind of like Goodwill. My basic job there is carrying out the heavy stuff - couches, washers, dryers, stoves, etc. and putting them in people's cars and trucks.
The only people we should try to get even with...
    ...are those who've helped us.

Right 'round the corner could be bigger than ourselves.

Don't sell yourself short any amount of time or money donated is a noble thing, wether it's 6 years, 6 months, 6 weeks, or 6 days.

-Every christmas, each classroom at school is assigned a family to help out and we are always very generous with gift cards and things they ask for (every teen gets a PJ CD :)).
-Husband buys lots of raffle tickets at work for various charities and plays in an expensive golf outing every year for Knights of Columbus (they don't keep the money, they donate it to a different local cause every year).

I'm sure there are more (I've donated a poster and money to Wishlist Foundation) and I have no idea what percent of our annual income these add up to.... I don't keep track of that. Never really wrote down everything we do as we don't write anything off.
