    tim, HOLY CRAP!

    "freedom" is awesome!

thanks again gluten...you guys are going to give me an "inflated head"! lol again, it just encourages me to do more work...so that's a good thing!

there was another painting i wanted to put on the site that goes along with "freedom"...kind of like a "sister" or "brother" painting...it's the mirror image of "freedom" and i painted them both at the same time. they were intended to be hanged side by side - you'll notice i do a lot of "night and day" stuff...but the photo was done by someone after i sent it to them and the glare from the flash was too much to put on the site, it's kind of hard to see the trees in the lower right hand corner, but they are the same as "freedom"...but here it is...it's called "a lyric at midnight"...they are both supposed to be kind of like northern lights inspired - like i would imagine a day turning into night at the "tree line" in northern canada. i was listening to rage against the machine's "freedom" at the time and it was close to midnight as i was finishing them, hence the names and the chaotic nature of both paintings...both paintings are somewhere in calgary, alberta...

thanks to you too gummibear ( a fellow atlantic canadian!), and to everyone who has taken the time to look. i can't wait to show you all some more PJ inspired paintings!
    please keep posting pics!
  • mookie, I like your paintings a lot. I think they're great. I just stuck a picture of mine at the end of a poem in the poetry forum that is tiled, (the painting) like yours. of a leaf.
    Salut baloo
  • thanks burtschips. i checked out your leaves. i also love the colour of the leaves in the fall. there are areas here in nova scotia that are unbelievable in the fall - orange, yellow, green, and red forever.... you'd love it.
are your paintings on canvas? did you use a close up of leaves as reference, or would you describe them as more of an abstract from memory kind of work? the color is awesome! nice work! of course i liked the tiled idea too...
got any more? i'd like to check them out.

    wow, those are incredible!

i love that you use trees in your pieces a lot. i LOVE trees and am hoping to get a full back panel tattoo of a tree with some obscure PJ references. i just need to find the right tree. the right tree is hard to find!

it's awe-inspiring that you don't use brushes in your work. maybe that's my problem...maybe i need to toss the brushes.

thanks for sharing your work and I can't wait to see the Crazy Mary inspired pieces. it's great to know there are so many talented Maritimers out there!
    i. am. mine.
  • thanks lanners! are you a fellow haligonian? i noticed that you saw the fantastic halifax show...just curious.

i do use brushes on some pieces if it calls for some detail work, but not very often, i don't like using them... for the most part it's rags, sponges, foam, hands, that kind of stuff. whatever works. i've even used old scratched cd's that don't play anymore on a piece or two...to get a kind of weird swirling effect. weird, eh? i didn't use any brushes on "arms raised in a v" though.

i don't know what it is with the trees, but they almost always make their way into the paintings...there are ten dead ones at the bottom of "arms" to represent the album title, and the line "the dead lay in pools of maroon below"...i can't stop with the trees! jeremy is the big split one in the middle with the "v" shape. there is a tiny one in the crazy mary piece i'm doing...there is also one that i want to paint from a red hot chili peppers concert dvd "live at slane castle"...i went to the show - just outside of dublin, and i remember the tree...the dvd opens up with a shot of the tree and i can remember seeing the person working the camera behind it...it's just a very cool looking old tree. i'm going to do a segmented version of it someday.

good luck finding the right tree for your tat. sounds interesting. i'd be interested to hear what PJ lyrics, songs and / or meaning you plan to incorporate. the celtic tree of life is an interesting design, it's one of my faves...don't know if you're familiar with it. it's round, and has great symbolic significance in celtic culture.

do you have some stuff that i could take a look at? i'm always curious to see what others are doing with their art, if you're willing to share some of your work with us...and you're right - not enough of the talent in atlantic canada gets seen. not that i'm in that group (the talented ones i mean... lol), but there are a lot of talented artists around here. i think it's being next to the ocean and having so much access to nature that inspires people. hope all is well on this rainy night in hali. sorry for the lengthy post...

this is the only piece i have a photo of because it's the only piece i've done in a long time. please be gentle...it was something i threw together for a friend's birthday because i couldn't afford to buy her a present.

i can't believe i'm posting this--it pales in comparison to everyone else's work. oh, and what you are seeing is the whole canvas. It is just one of those small 7"x9" dealies from the Dollarama, and yes, it is only a quarter of a sunflower. i usually do trees, so while i'm in the right park, i'm in the wrong flowerbed.

it reminds me of georgia o'keefe.
don't EVER be "ashamed" of your art. it represents a part of you...an expression.
i look forward to seeing more of your pieces.
  • I'm sorry mookie, but..i have to tell you again. Your art kicks ass..

Thanks Mookie, I didn't ask questions because I read the thread and got my answers.

My tiles are nearly real size on bits of wood about 3"x3" or slightly smaller. They were done at the time that I picked up the leaf and sat it behind a card frame cut to the size of the board. So the first one is the real leaf, with red veins. The second is a negative in colour with green veins. These were done carefully and took time. The last two were done in ten minutes a piece based on the colour and the composition of the leaf, abstracted, very liquid in form. I think they were acrylic but maybe gouache. It was a case of free instincts born from controlled study.

I've posted other stuff in other threads.... you should have a look at Tchaliz' open door in the poetry forum... his stuff is great!! I might tie it together later, posted some selfportraits in a thread on this forum too. I look forward to keeping up with your painting! Gotta get to nova scotia some time!!

your friend must have been elated! the painting is awesome! better than any other present she would have received i'm sure. pipe down with the self criticism and be confident in your work! unforuntately, we are often our own worst critics.
i love the color and the composition...i mean that it's not the whole flower...just a cool view - being off center, if you get what i'm saying. the center of the flower in the corner is my favorite part...how did you paint that? i'm drawing a blank on what the center of a flower is called...brain dead i am for a moment i guess...
if you get some photos of your trees please share them. i'm anxious to see more.

also, ditto to what gluten said!

i'm surpised to hear that they are on wood! there are far too few of us using wood as our medium of choice these days. it harkens back to earlier times in the world of art...even the mona lisa is on poplar!
the process you described sounds intriguing, and i can't imagine how you did the first part and made them look as fantastic as they do! time consuming, as you said, i'm sure. your description only adds to my interest in the pieces -a fantastic concept, in my opinion. really well done!
i'll have a look at the threads you mentioned and look for more, and if you ever do make it to this side of the atlantic, cape breton is where it's at...it's the most beautiful part of nova scotia...no offense to any mainland bluenosers!

so, how long does it take you to complete a piece like "arms"?
  • hey gluten, this one was pretty quick. i get stuck on some pieces, but this one i finished in about four days. from cutting, sanding and preparing the wood to finishing the painting. i had a pretty clear vision of what i wanted to do, so it went pretty quick. i probably could have done it faster, but some of the reds and yellows took a long time to dry.

so, mookie b, what are you working on now?
  • finishing up the "crazy mary" piece, it will be called "sometimes we did", then working on finishing a piece i started a while ago of subcomandante marcos of the zappatistas...it's kind of a weird "portrait" i guess you could say. all the comments here have prompted me to start working on a couple of sketches based on black and indifference...two of my favorite PJ tunes. then there was yet another tree piece that i had in mind...i have some wood sitting around, so if i have enough i might start that next week. getting the crazy mary piece done and getting a pic is my first priority right now though. the PJ fan i'm doing it for is getting impatient!
  • sorry my inexperience on this forum....but i have to tell you that that is a terrific work!!It's amazing..the colours the association with the jeremy....its very awasome!!hope to see more of it! (and sorry my english :\ )
    ..."believe in nothing..believe me"... =)
