the tone in davey's voice put anna on the defensive. she looked at him and all she could see was anger and resentment.

'nothing. i don't want anything from you davey. you're right. you can't do this now. and i can't do it at all. ever. we can't be friends. so don't come up and talk to me if we're in the same crowd. i can't stand the accusatory looks you give me. goodbye davey.'

with that anna walked away back towards arlo's. davey stood there for a few minutes trying to take stock of what just happened. he'd just been blown off by the woman he loved. by the woman he would probably always love. and you know what. it felt alright to him. he smiled to himself and began walking.

freya sat on the edge on the bed, trying not to breath too loud as she buttoned up her shirt. vincent lay sprawled on his back asleep, his flaccid penis resting against his thigh, spent. what she was doing freya didn't know. she loved him despite what he had done to her and to anna. at least she thought it was love. when she told him about the baby he was thrilled. he held her and caressed her. said it was all working out for the best. standing up she went into the toher room and dialled anna's number. she doubted she could ever explain this to her sister. absently rubbing she belly she waited. there was no answer. she replaced the phone. turning she found vincent standing in the doorway. she smiled awkwardly. he stepped towards her.

'who you calling?'

'what do you need to talk to her about?'

vincent laid his hand on freya's cheek. she tried not to be repulsed by his touch.

'you've got me baby. that's all you need.'

freya moved away from vincent.

'don't be telling me who i can and can't talk to. anna is my sister. i'll talk to her whenever i feel like it. besides i'd be surprised if she ever spoke to me again.'

'you really are a pig vincent.'

freya didn't move nearly fast enough. the back of vincent's hand connectioned with her face and she stumbled. she was momentarily stunned. she looked at her husband hating him, but also hating herself for being so weak. not sure whether it was bravado or stupidity, freya squared up against him.

'don't think for a minute that i believe anything you have to say to me vincent. i know what you did to anna. and i am the only reason you are not rotting in a jail cell. you ever strike me like that again or treat me with such disrespect and you'll end up back there being someone else's bitch. you understand?'

trembling inside but determined not to lose it in front of vincent, freya retreated to the bathrooom, where she promptly vomitted. when she came out, vincent was nowhere to be found. she was alone.

vincent sat in a dingy bar, nursing a beer and resenting freya more with every passing minute. he told himself that she needed him. all those years ago when anna rebuffed him and freya was waiting in the wings, begging for attention, he knew he's found someone to play with. he wanted anna but she was maybe just too much for him. for any man as it turns out. it took davey long enough to dump her and now she'd fallen on her feet with this other guy and he was still stuck with freya. he didn't even think that he was understimating anna. that was his mistake. she was prepared to let her whole life collapse. he had to admire her for that. though that whole manic thing she had going didn't exactly appeal to him. she really got messed up during those times and was no good for anything or to be around anyone. but he'd get her. somehow he would get his way with anna. he just had to deal with freya first.

vincent looked at the old man with disdain. the guy was wearing a cheap suit and probably spent the hours he was meant to be at work, drinking and wishing he didn't have to go home to face the missus. they were ball breakers, all of them. the old man motioned to the bar tender for a couple more drinks. when he set them down on the bar, the old man downed half his glass in one hit.

'looking like that, it has to be about a woman. am i right?'

'it's no skin off my nose. you just look like you could do with someone to talk to. but hey you want to be alone i can dig that.'

with that the guy gets up grabbing his beer.

with a little bit of caution, the guy sat back down. vincent gave off this vibe like some caged animal in the zoo. he had seen men like this. his father was a man like that. well while he was alive anyway. vincent took the proffered drink and looked at the guy trying to gauge him.

'so you come in here everyday dressed like you're going to work, trying to escape your wife?'

'i think you heard me. you come in here looking like you're going to work. obviously your wife still thinks you have a job. does she bust your balls or are you just a pussy?'
