    but due to the brainwashing he had received by Pakistan's secret police, he totally forgot about his matriculation in the premier classical music school in Calcutta where he had learnt ancient rhythms and renditions, and where if he had ever returned there, he would have been mobbed; it was like a void in his memory - hence the famous phrase, engendered by his life, 'the black hole of Calcutta'.......

    He certainly still had that curious walk, with the hip shift that earned him the nickname Shimmyshimmy back in those sailors' bars he was said to frequent: if only he could get to shake his hand for a secret twitch of his signet ring in morse code against the palm, then he'd know for sure.
