Let us write a story sentence by sentence.

davey backed off a little.

'i'm sorry. i shouldn't have grabbed you like that.'

he sighed and rested his hands on his hips.

'dex called me and he sounded like he was high. i mean really high. it just gave me a bad feeling and i thought maybe he..... i don't know..... he couldn't even tell me if isabelle was with him.'

'i don't know what to tell you davey. i don't know where dex lives. just come in and wait for arlo. he won't be too much longer i imagine.'

anna stood aside to allow davey entry into arlo's place. he hesitated.

'i'm not gonna bite you.'

'there's nothing you can do until arlo gets back.'

the phone rang. anna looked into the apartment and then back at davey.

'i got to take this. come in if you want.'

anna left davey standing and went to answer the phone. when davey heard her speak curiosity go the better of him.

'oh thank goodness. you know davey's here looking for him. said he was talking to him earlier. he was quite concerned...yeah yeah i'll tell him..okay i'll see you then.'

when anna hung the phone up she turned and found davey standing right behind her.

'dex is fine. well as fine as he ever is. you're too much of an old woman sometimes davey.'

not wanting to get into any kind of debate with davey, anna walked away. for the second time he grabbed her.

'don't walk away from me anna. i wasn't imagining the situation dex was in.'

davey self consciously dropped his arm to his side.

'and how about you anna? are you doing alright?'

'just get by. what you're going through is horrendous anna. you shouldn't be just getting by. did you talk with arlo?'

davey shook his head.

'i should have known better. you know anna, i try to be your friend. i try to forget i still love you when you come to me with stuff instead of going to your lover and all i get is slapped in the face. i just can't do it anymore. you tire me out and i've had it. just tell arlo i'll talk to him later.'

davey started towards the door.

'nothing. just forget it anna. i've got to go'

davey managed to make it almost to the lobby before he leant against the wall, thinking how much he missed having anna in his life as a partner. he shook it off as just feeling sorry for himself. but then from what he had seen and been told of arlo and anna, it didn't appear that their union was any great love affair. of course he couldn't look at it objectively. he was too close to anna.
davey pushed himself off the wall, and shoving his hands in his pockets went out into the street.

davey tried to ignore anna. but it was never an easy thing to do.

'davey, please.'

he didn't stop until her hand upon his arm made it necessary.
