You just hit the nail on the head, my friend. My sentiments exactly! It's the same reason why crap movies like High School Musical 3 and Beverly Hills Chihuahua were #1 at the box office when they were released. We're constantly told by the mainstream media what to eat, what to like, what's cool, what's not cool, etc... It's our choice whether or not to listen to that shit and follow it like sheep. Sadly the majority of people, especially North Americans, are incredibly lazy and prefer to have their culture spoon-fed to them by TV and the media.

1st off High School Musical is for kids and i wen to see it because my neice wanted to see it and i am not going to give her crap for liking what she wants. sorry for being a sheep:)

every generation always says the same shit. i have freinds in their 50's who laugh about music from the 90's and call it shit.

in reality it is our generation of downloading that has ruined mainstream music. companies are not going to waste their money on stuff that we will steal.

Mainstream is to keep the advertisers happy.
Nothing has to be too complicated for them - and that includes film or music.
Mainstream music is written to a set format of 3 and a half minutes long with 2 verses, 2 choruses, and an instrumental bridge.

just remember that pearl Jam, Nirvana were all mainstream

Difference is that they were part of a new sound, an innovation in music. Then unfortunatley they spawned a bunch of crappy rip-off bands, much on which we still hear today.
  • Music is not really a big part of most people's lives, so why blame them for listening to what the industry is handing to them? Mainstream music is easily accessible to most people. They aren't going to dig deep for what is considered to be "good" music by our standards. They would if they were really into music and stuff, but most mainstream listeners aren't crazy music fans like us lol. I used to listen to a lot of it when I was a kid, and liked it. Then when I really got into music, I "broke the music wall" or whatever, and now looking back on it, I think it's crap.

But then again, all music sounds the same if you only hear it once or if you don't really listen to the genre. I bet if you took a nickelback album and listened to it enough like any other album you'd be able to tell the songs apart. Don't deny me because you don't like nickelback, because it's true.

get a 30GB iPod and fill it. there's your new radio station. that's what i do and i love it.

there's a lot of good music out there... just not on the radio. i'd rather listen to the sound of a diesel truck engine than mainstream radio.

True, it's for kids. But there's crappy kids fare and there's good kids fare. The two movies I mentioned are brainless piles of crap that talk down to children and insult their intelligence. Kids are smart and they deserve better. A movie like "Wall-E" on the other hand, now there's an intelligent family movie. I think Kids need more stuff like that, and less garbage like Hannah Montana. Just my opinion of course. I didn't mean any offense.

  • I stopped listening to the radio a couple of years ago because horrible genres like nu metal and emo. So do what i do, get an 80 gb ipod or whatever mp3 player, and fill it up with pearl jam and other badass music and just hit shuffle, or make some playlists.

(btw, i haven't heard a decent guitar solo in a LONG time)

  • It's completely ridiculous to have any conversation about mainstream on an internet message board.. For cryin out loud, if you are on here, then you have access to the internet! There are tons and tons and tons of musicians music on the web, that is not mainstream.. You have the damn key to unlock the door to all sorts of non-radio / non-major label music.. Whether it's Pure Volume, Last FM, Myspace, whatever.. there are tons of options to explore music without even paying for it! It's not like you have to take chances at the record store on buying something you are not familiar with, like those days before the internet.. You can preview the bands today! Now quit yer bitchin about the radio and go find some killer new band that none of us have ever heard of.. Just remember to come back here and tell us about them :)

i don't know if they were a part of a new sound that was never heard before but they were a new sound for that time. Pearl Jam when they came out reminded me of more classic rock but with interesting lyrics. Nirvana was punk rock miked with melodies

Why is everyone here assuming I only listen to the radio? I rarely listen to the radio. I was just pointing out how bad the direction of mainstream rock is going. I DO listen to Wilco, My Morning Jacket, Kings Of Leon, Tea Leaf Green, Les Claypool, etc.

i didn't take offense, i also took my niece to see Wall-e too and she loved it. let's rememeber that when we were kids we loved crap too that we be laughed at now. this is a common things. kids will grow up and learn to love what they find exciting. and if they grow up to like stuff liek nickleback or whatever shit i sout there thats fine as we must remember that not everyone will be a big lover of music.

You guys are talking like the majority of the people are buying the mainstream. That album sold 300k, the last one sold what, 5 million total? Thats still barely 1% of the total population, and majority of that isn't to the kids who would define this generation and the next, its to 25-35 age group of people who the only music they hear is on the radio. So few people listen to the radio now its rather irrelevent. I'm 19, and its pretty rare that I find anyone my age that likes something mainstream like nickelback and fall out boy as something more then a passing fancy. People have rather diverse tastes, and probably for the first time in history, very casual music fans can be exposed to music that relatively underground.
Most people won't go out and find new music, but if you put good music in their face, they'll eat it up. I know plenty of people with nickelback in their ipod...they also have arcade fire and the shins. Mainstreams not a reflection of the majority, its the reflection of a vocal minority.
