Nice to see some love (even if it's pointing out a depressing song) for Peter Gabriel's Up.

    Anyway..

    Portishead- Roads
Alison Krauss & Union Station- It Doesn't Matter
    Beatles- Eleanor Rigby
and any good bagpipe rendition of Amazing Grace.

  • Johnny Cash's cover of "If you could read my mind." So sad.

I agree with you on the song but for some reason I like Johnny Cash singing it better. His voice is so deep and seems to add that much more pain to the song.

  • "Crackle and Drag" by Paul Westerberg.

Any song with the title referring to the sound a body bag makes is pretty depressing. Also the following lyrics are pretty heart wrenching.

She stuffed some rags on the floor
    She closed the window
    She made a pillow
    On the oven door
    And as her baby slept
She took a long deep breath
Now they're zippin her up in a bag

Fuck that's depressing, Okay I win.

i really hate Elvis, but i think "don't cry, daddy" fits well in this category.

anything in the top 10 singles chart is pretty depressing...

on a serious note though josh pyke and elliot smith manage to have this depressing sense of melancoly and I get teary whenever i listen to them, damien rice, ryan adams, but in a different good way (i know that makes no sense)
