The Tragically Hip never made a good album.

  • xSmacksoundX made a comment after my "snide" comment and didnt seem to say anything about the remark. the only two people who are offended by it, seem to be from London. Perhaps it is seen as much more derogatory in Europe than it is here.

I knew i'd get some bad feedback on this thread and I couldn't care less what you think I am... so no offense taken

Certainly you just created this thread to get a rise out of people. Nobody has such poor taste in music that they would post something so completely idiotic and expect anything less than to be called retarded (stop being so PC people -- it's nauseating). I don't like 100% of the Hips stuff but there are few bands who can compare to them in terms of making unbelievably good albums.

It's nothing to do with being PC, it's not the particular insult used that bothers ME, it's the fact that insults were needed at all. I'm not some busy-body campaigner for the prevention of comments about disabilities. I'd be no more or less annoyed with responses like the one in question if he had said "You have AIDS" or "I fucked your wife". I just think that a response like "I think you're wrong" would have sufficed.

    Jeez people...

okay, definately, YES, telling somebody they are retarded in London is much more significant than saying the same thing in North American, if this is their equivalent.

They have like 1-3 AMAZING songs in each album then the rest of them suck. IMO they could compact their entire catalog into one FUCKING INCREDIBLE album and I wouldn't miss anything. I hate to even own all their album because I only listen to like 2 or 3 songs on each. They are really good at making plain TERRIBLE songs.

so by making this point you either own each and every HIP cd and/or have listened extensively to each and every cd

which is it? IT'S REAL funny TO ME to have spent so much time trying to find out...especially if you bought their cds...perhaps you bought every cd hoping to prove yourself wrong...or perhaps you've spent hours and hours listening to each cd only to find this out...take what road you want...i will still think you are...

REAL funny it took you this long...how was world container, btw? LMFAO!

'Fully Completely' doesn't have a bad song on it. Most of the other albums have a song or too I'm not so keen on.

Up To Here : When The Weight Comes Down, Trickle Down.
Road Apples : On The Verge.
Day For Night : So Hard Done By, Titanic Terraruim
Henhouse : Butts Wigglin, Put It Off.
    Phantom Power : Rules.
Music@Work : Sharks, The Bear (The only Hip song I hate)
Violet Light : Are You Ready, All Tore Up.
    Evolution : Summers Killing Us.
World Container : Pretend, World Container.

I don't recall saying otherwise, I'm just trying to promote every user's right to voice an opinion without being jumped on and insulted. It is a DISCUSSION board after all.

The moment you convince me that I'm in the wrong here, I'd be happy to fuck off.

I don't recall you having any claim on this thread. At worst, my "hijacking" will result in it being locked which should be fine by you of course, what with it being "retarded". If that happens, I'll just be saddened that my attempts to stop this board from becoming a stagnant shithole of insults and petty flamefests have been ignored.

In order to promote thread integrity, I disagree with both the OP and those who want to crucify him. I am ambivalent about the Hip. Nautical Disaster really is an awesome song though.

get over it people, i am sorry for saying that, okay.

i just love the hip, and he suckered me into a rash response.

Don't sweat it ... My initial reaction was pretty similar ...

I have listened to their entire catalog several times and have noticed that every song except the following are total bullshit:

    Opiated
    Little Bones
    Fiddlers Green
    On the Verge
    Fight
    Fully Completely
    Wheat Kings
    Grace, Too
    Greasy Jungle
    Fire In The Hole
    So Hard Done By
    Coconut Cream (haha)
    Poets
    Bobcaygeon
    Silver Jet
    Summer's Killing Us
    Lonely End of The Rink

Most of those songs are freaking incredible... I could easily do without EVERY other song made by the hip... They suck otherwise... They make so much filler in every album. Its a damn shame.

Out of all their albums I'd say Day for Night is their most consistent work and it stil has got a lot of crap in it (Thugs, Scared, an Inch an Hour, Emergency)

i dont get this man. i mean honestly, just dont get it. those aren't really their hits... those are album tracks. i can totally understand how someone might not dig the hip, they're kinda eccentric. i can understand loving them too (cos i do). i can understand thinking they're good but with an inconsistent catalogue.

but i cannot understand these extremes. how the entire rest of their catalogue is AWFUL but those songs are AWESOME. makes no sense. esp because that's a really weird selection of songs to draw the line on. esp when you must have listened to ALL of their albums to find those songs. why do you keep bothering if you think their albums suck so bad? shit man, i'll burn that cd for you and you can toss the albums and not have to buy anymore god-awful hip albums. deal?
    and like that... he's gone.

I love the hip; think In Violet Light is their best work.

That album features four of the greatest songs the Hip have ever written:

It's a Good Life if You Don't Weaken
    The Dire Wolf
    Leave
    The Dark Canuck
"I try my best to chug, stomp, weep, whisper, moan, wheeze, scat, blurt, rage, whine, and seduce. With my voice I can sound like a girl, the boogieman, a Theremin, a cherry bomb, a clown, a doctor, a murderer. I can be tribal. Ironic. Or disturbed. My voice is really my instrument."

    -Tom Waits
