are kicking ass. as i type this i am listening to the leak of the stills's 2nd album "without feathers". i saw them with sam roberts a couple of weeks ago and both montreal bands were fantastic live (especially sam roberts). both of their new albums are going to be amazing. in canada they've already been released but we yanks have to wait another month.

but anyways, between these bands and broken social scene, it seems like most really good, young bands are all from up north.

I totally disagree, Sam Roberts is a bad singer and horrible live.

Sam Roberts just played in my town on Saturday and I ran into him, he was a super nice guy. He invited me and my 5yr old in for the sound check, took some pic's, gave her a some free stuff, signed stuff for her, the whole band was great to us, let us hang out for the afternoon, super nice guys.

Sloan is one of my very favorite Canadian bands...probably second only to the Tragically Hip. I saw Sloan open for the Foo Fighters last summer, and both my wife and I were way more into the Sloan show than the Foos. Sloan doesn't get enough love.
I've got to admit, it's getting better.

Wolf Parade is pretty good too.

Then there is that old school canadian. whats his name he's been around forever it seems, put out a good album last year and just recorded another album in three days that was quite political called living in war. He talks about impeaching the president...

Oh yeah Neil Young. Thats it. He is still not too shabby even at 60 years old.

I'm not the biggest Sam Roberts fan. I heard him live and he sounded awful, but b/c so many friends like him, he's growing on me. I have a couple of friends who bought his new cd. They said it's incredible.

Canadian bands had the greatest impact on me in the '90s -- those were my teen years. The Tragically Hip, Our Lady Peace, Moist, I Mother Earth, The Tea Party, The Watchmen, Great Big Sea, Sloan, Holly McNarland, Matthew Good Band, 54-40, Big Sugar, etc. There were a number of years there where it seemed like Canada was not producing like it had in the past (at least mainstream Canada). New Canadian bands sucked and many of the aforementioned bands broke up or put out less than stellar efforts. Fortunately, it appears as though Canada is producing some top bands and great music once again. It's great to see!

Sam Roberts rocks, he was great live. The Trews are great to, just straight ahead rock and roll.

Wintersleep is a much better band with a much better live show than either The Trews or Sam Roberts.

trews sounded awesome on their first cd, i was disappointed with new one.

The new sam roberts album is really good. I've listened to it about a dozen times now and i really am beginning to like it. mind flood and mystified heavy are among his best songs IMO.

yep, it's all shit cause EVERY articles i've read about it, they were only talking about 40% of the bands making music here, the 60% of french bands were always forgotten, but they're in fact the best thing happening here, just that no one really care, and it's allright...

It would have been better if they would have labelled it a "Toronto scene", cause shitty bands are coming with this press. Example: Mobile on Interscope, never saw these guys anywhere, now they pop on Interscope, watch this crap going, it's only a beginning, recording studios are full right now...

Here's a repertoire, french and english and not only from Montreal, some are from France or other places also, but you got almost all the artist and link to their website here: http://bandeapart.fm/artistes_liste.asp (click the artist, then click their website link, some have free mp3)

    Some that i like:
    Jean Leloup
    Les Breastfeeders
    Plywood 3/4
    Fred Fortin
    Malajube
    Les Colocs
    Le Nombre
    WD-40

Some others, i don't like all of them, but some are popular:
    Cowboys Fringuants
    Pierre Lapointe
    Corneille
    Dumas
    Loco Locass
    Les Trois Accords
    Champion
    La Descente du coude

From France, but i'm sure someone else would know more about French from France band :) :

    Daft Punk
    Bérurier Noir
    Lofofora
    Prototype
    Katerine
    Arthur H

There's a lot more, but that will be it for now :), there's this other website: http://www.montrealshows.com (click on bands)

Great list! The Weakerthans are opening a few shows for the Hip this summer, which is sure to be a mind-blowing EARgasmic experience. The Hip are my favorite band of all time, and the Weakerthans are easily in my top 5. Too bad I'm stuck here in Calgary while all the Hip/Weakerthans gigs are out in Ontario and Quebec. You lucky bastards out east always get the good stuff, and it annoys the hell out of me. Remind me to rub all your noses in it when I see the Hip at the Sasquatch Festival next month.
