mad love for soundgarden...one of my favorites
love all the records
Ugly Truth off Louder Than Love is mind-blowing
Down on the Upside is the best overall album
great great stuff0 -
i had "louder than love" on tape for years and years, but just recently bought it on cd. there was alot of subtle guitar playing i was missing... some really minimalistic, hypnotic stuff. the band really got interesting when chris started playing guitar, he and thayil formed a very trippy combination. some of the oddest, most creative guitar parts ever thought of.0

I'll have to disagree on that.
I don't expect everyone to love his voice, the high notes are pretty damn high.
But i can't see anyone else fronting that band. His voice and kim thayil's guitar were perfectly in sync IMO.0 -

Besides all the unwarranted hating, I'd have to say that I'd be in favor of a one-off show down the line-- like at their RRHOF induction-- just because their last one ended with Ben storming off stage.
I will say no album EVER has had a better opening 5 tracks than Badmotorfinger.0 -

even in the invisible world of the internet, you have the personality to clear out an entire room. good job. stating soundgarden as a "fad band" reflects poorly on your musical views/tastes/opinions... it sheds new light on all of your previous posts, tainting them, and soiling any relevancy they might have held. much like your opinion of cornell with his past soundgarden work.
PJ is my favorite band, this is a PJ board, and I have bad musical taste? That makes about as much sense as these infantile posts you keep coming back at me with, when I have supplied a clear personal opinion for you to dispute. Instead, you would rather just rather try and discredit me because deep down you know I'm right. A Soundgarden album will take you back to place in time, it just won't transcend time because Cornell's career moves since leaving Soundgarden paint them as a good band in a single place in time. A couple good albums does not bring a band legendary status unless Cornell would have died, and a potential was cut short. Cornell didn't die. His credibility since Soundgarden disbanded sure did though.
If you want to rebut this I suggest you stay on point.Once in a while you can get shown the light, in the strangest of places if you look at it right.0 -
not to be a dick, but i seriously have no idea what you are even trying to say. i don't understand the basic fundamentals of your argument. someone can do something 20 years after the fact and have it tarnish their past work? really? i didn't know that.0

SG was a great band. Kim and his axe = wow! Chris can sign well, Jesus Christ Pose!
Just my 2 cents.
Oh...and SG is not a "fad" band.( OIIIIO ) It's about being able to go where most can't - Forget it, It's a Jeep thing!0 -

Look I'm not much of a fan of Carry On, but to be fair to him, it was just him trying out a bunch of different styles - experimentation doesn't smack of selling out, it shows he really is in it for the music . Euphoria Morning was incredibly well received by critics, even though it didn't sell bucket loads it still features some of his best stuff.
In terms of where he is at now and this 'loss of credibility', I can only guess at what you are hinting at. The time he cancelled a show for some jeans company party? Someone on his team double booked him - the guy no longer works for him, and he made the date up. His modelling for that designer guy? Cornell was being styled by designers even back in the Soundgarden days (look it up), it's no big deal.
The fact is, he works really hard, he plays massive tours, plays for nearly three hours a night, and is keen to keep moving forward by trying out new styles of music. Anything but a sell-out in my book.
Anyway here's a recent interview with him where he talks about his motivation for making music:

How exactly has the guy lost credibility? I'm not a fan of Carry On but a lot of people liked it, and you can't fault him for trying something new. The only thing I can think of is the designer jeans gig, which was an arsehole move. Apart from that, I'm struggling. Unless you're one of those rock elitists who vomit at the thought of him working with Timberland (can't spell 'crap' without spelling 'rap' and all that shit, right?).
To be honest, I've always thought that hating music because of your personal opinion on the artist is a bit stupid. Music is music, don't let predjudices get in the way. Axl Rose? Twat. The stuff he did with Guns and Roses? Absoutely amazing. Of course, it works the other way as well - building up a false image of somebody and completely worshipping them, to the point that if the artist took a shit it would be hailed as gold. Some of the Chris Cornell fans on the official Cornell message board are frankly quite scary.
I don't think Cornell was Soundgarden however, as somebody here said. For starters, if he was, his solo albums would have rivaled Soundgardens (which they don't, IMO). And as good as his backing band are at the moment, they are no Soundgarden or Rage.0 -
I'm not a huge post-Soundgarden Cornell fan, I love Euphoria Morning and the first Audioslave record was ok but the rest isn't really my thing.....
Still, nothing will tarnish Soundgarden's legacy in my eyes....
They remain a band on their own, easily one of the greatest ever.....
Superunknown and Down On The Upside are arguably 2 of the greatest albums ever made.....
Cornell wasn't Soundgarden - Soundgarden were Soundgarden, those 4 had an amazing musical connection.....'The more I studied religions the more I am convinced that man never worshipped anything but himself.' - Sir Richard Francis Burton0 -
People like culot4 are the ones that have a crush on Chris Cornell and they can't handle it. They're just so jealous, its funny.bombs, dropping down, please forgive our hometown0

i agree... that's a heavy duty man-crush gone awry.0

I haven't followed Cornell post-Soundgarden, but I like his 06 acoustic set from Sweden. It's clear the man is still deeply into his music and remains a major force.0 -
Hey Chris Corny....When are you going to drop Magnum on us?Once in a while you can get shown the light, in the strangest of places if you look at it right.0

Well yeah, I take it back-- but Cornell wrote nearly all those songs. I'd me rephrase that and say he was the most important member. Saying that Cornell ruins SG would be like saying the Pete Townshend ruins The Who. It makes no sense.0 -
soundgarden was a great band one of those i ask 'how would be their music today' theres no real good music, pearl jam is one of those few bands that are just, excellent and perfect.
chris cornell has a great voice, though i listened his album and its quite.. um spoiled..? i dont know, i speak spanish, audioslave was also a good band and euphoria morning a nice album. soundgarden was just different nothing sounded like them. and i hate when people talk about sg having only black hole sun in mind, come on they were more than that!!!!
and by the way, -please answer my post no one does in this forum :S - what has happened with ben shepherd what has he been doing?, and kim??0 -

Zoolander was a shit film.0 -
culot4 wrote:Sure it holds water because the only problem with using VH as an example is that band sucks too. Soundgarden in its time was a really good band, but when Cornell decided to turn into Derrick Zoolander it made Soundgarden look like a fad cashing in on the right image at the right time. If it was 1985 I don't think Cornell would have had any problem using a can of Aqua Net on his head, and being the frontman for Poison. We all got duped. The guy is a phony.
Listening to elitist bitches calling artists 'sell outs' is getting old. The guy has never seemed anything but extrememly genuine and so maybe you should consider that his choice to write a 'pop' album like Carry On was actually something he wanted to do for artistic reasons?
Further given that Soundgarden was around in 1985....and Cornell sure as hell wasn't wearing Aqua Net I can't understand the justification for calling him a phony. Soundgarden (and Cornell) always did what they wanted the way they wanted and thats what mad them them cool-setting the trend rather than following it.0
