The difference is that AIC proved that Layne is replaceable. This new guy Duvall is just as good. Turn him into a junkie and you got your band back in full.

Duvall certainly is NOT just as good as Layne. The only thing he can do better is play a guitar.

Oh Wait, shit !!! Its not Led Zepplin without Plant is it? Its 3 remaining members of Zep with, potentially, some other dude.

He is good and I like AIC with him but he is no Layne. Layne really was one of a kind.

I wouldn't go that far! He is an incredible singer, and a worthy frontman for the band, but obviously for some people his vocals and style just won't hit the spot. Personally I don't care what they call themselves, because ultimately that just comes down to semantics - if the music is good then I see absolutely no problem. So yeah, what I'm basically saying is I CAN'T FUCKING WAIT TO HEAR IT :D !!!!
  • what the fuck? cant you bitches take a fucking joke ? where did i say "I only listen to bands that have all the original members" , oh right, there it is in my post, oh wait a second I lost it, ok yeah thats right because its not there. By the way changing a drummer and a singer is a completely different ball game. Unless your Led Zepplin or The Who.

So if Eddie quit Pearl Jam and was replaced with say, Zac from Rage Against the Machine, you would still you know, see multiple shows every tour? I don't think so.

No, but if they replaced Ed with Mike Patton i would TOTALLY be there.

    Same difference.

The band lost a singer, and got a new one with WAAAAAY more range.

    ...and sing.

He's got a Chris Cornell quality to his voice.

i don't know about that. Kurt Cobain killed himself on April 5th too.

those guys are kind of, you know, 2 of a kind.

  • I don't think Layne is "replaceable", but it comes down to a choice do you want to hear the remaining members of the band perform or not? Layne aint here - so they need a vocalist and Duvall is worthy. They chose to keep the name "AIC" because they intended on playing AIC music and didn't want to give up the name recognition - which I think is fair. They all worked hard for their success - they shouldn't have to give it away because Layne made a fatal mistake.

Totally. People should check out the song Still Got A Hold On My Heart on Comes With The Fall's myspace, during the bridge he sounds a dead ringer for Cornell on Call Me A Dog.

I'm not against, but Layne was so essential to their success that it wasn't theirs to give away. With Cantrells weak voice alone they wouldn't have gone mainstream, but had Layne lived, given his addled condition, he probably wouldn't have much of a voice left by now anyway. EDIT: actually, they'd probably be on a STP-style reunion tour right now, with all the hand-wringing and predictable mockery over whether or not he'd fallen off the wagon.

be interesting to see how many lead vocals Cantrell sings on this record.

How is Cantrell's voice weak? Certainly he doesn't have a rock power voice, but I think it's still damn good. All his solo stuff is simply quality, quality music. There are quite a few AIC songs that demonstrate a nice voice from Jerry (again, not a power voice but good nonetheless, e.g. Heaven Beside You).

This is true.. if you listen to some of their last live shows, Layne's voice was getting more high pitched and weak.
    Stone Gossard...riffmeister extraordinaire!

I am a man, I am advanced.....I am the first man to borrow Stone's leather pants!
  • William DuVall is talented in his own right. I have very strong and mixed feelings about the band name remaining but know why the choice was made. I would rather they used a different name and I don't feel right thinking Layne is not being replaced because of the band name. I wish them well and hope that the band has much success but I know I will never buy anything new from the band. But the guys are doing what they love and deserve to keep rocking out.

Alice in Chains is ascending on the horizon...

The band will kick off 2009 with a main stage slot on Australia's Soundwave Festival (Feb 21 - Mar 1) alongside Nine Inch Nails, Lamb of God, Alkaline Trio, The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus and more. However, more touring isn't the only thing up Alice in Chains' sleeve for 2009.
There's a brand new record on the way—the band's first studio album since 1995. Right now, Jerry Cantrell, Mike Inez, Sean Kinney and William Duvall are hunkered down in a Los Angeles studio crafting their latest opus. Produced by Nick Raskulinecz (Foo Fighters, Rush, Stone Sour), the album promises top be a sonic journey guided by eerily psychedelic solos and unforgettable riffs.

"zomg they're in the studio working on the new record and it sounds great, blah blah blah" - yeah, whatever. I've been hearing that since 2006. Same stuff for two years now.

Chinese Democracy will be out before this new CD....

Imagine, in 2006...someone asks you "which is coming out first, the new Alice In Chains CD, or Chinese Democracy?" And now look how things turned out. :p

im not going to read through 3 pages of people bashing the band.

so i really dont know whats been said after the first half of the first page.

    with that being said.

i dont see what the problem is with the guys wanting to go on.

jerry wrote most of the songs, and they are just as much if not more his than layne's.

why should he give up something that means so much to him , because layne couldnt kick ?

they are his songs. he should be "allowed" to play them.

i miss LS just like everyone else. but its fucked up to say that Jerry cant play the songs that he wrote in a band he started because Layne was a junkie, and fucked up his life.

    just my opinion.

    flame on.
    Peace, Love.
