First, Run DMC. Then NWA & Eazy. Always love the Tribe, Leaders of New School, De La Soul, EPMD.

Nowadays, there is still a little good hip-hop out there: Talib Kweli, Mos Def (his last album was all over the place musically), Common, Erick Sermon, Jean Grae (GREAT lady rapper), the Roots. People who rap about real shit, not just bling and guns and what not. You just have to weed through all the crap getting airplay (kind of like the rock scene I guess).

Wow. That's the true old school. Don't forget Kool Moe D! I never was that big of a rap fan but my early favorites were Run DMC, LL Cool J, Beastie Boys, Slick Rick.

NWA "Express Yourself" is probably the best rap song ever.

    forgot about Slick Rick...and LL
I remember when Run DMC's first album came out. I loved it. I was into rap pretty good there for awhile...until about 87 or so, then just a little bit here and there until the Chronic came out. Thats the last time I really listened to rap music. It changed a lot over the years...and for the much much worse as far as I am concerned.

Well, seeing as how it is "other music," it probably doesn't matter if it is related to Pearl Jam...

I'm pretty much digging "Damn It Feels Good To Be A Gangsta" by the Geto Boys...

Hip Hop and Rock is all I grew up listening to.
I agree with Ott that what everyone hears as rap is pretty much bullshit.
It's like people saying that Rock music sucks because all they hear on the radio is 3 doors down and Good Charlotte. The early 90's was the golden of all music IMO.

    De La Soul
    ATCQ
    Boogie Down Productions
    Common
    Del Tha Funkee Homosapien
    PE
    The Roots

The list goes on and on
