Anyone a fan of his?

I think he cool, he is so unique and unlike all that crap out there today.

My question is, why did he change is singing style. It sounds good, but he didnt always sing a growl. Anyone read anything why he ended up doing this.

Its a real exaggerated voice.

But Tom Waits rocks. He's the man

he is indeed unique, as you said che. not too certain about the growl, though. my favourite waits tune is "picture in a frame".

it may have been that, maybe age, maybe he was searching for a more defined voice

While he has always been rootsy (a lot of blues, jazz, and even country in his music), stylistically he changed big-time, from his first few recordings, to the rest of his work. His early stuff is more straight ahead jazz. I think he was going for more of a traditional singing style and voice to go with the more traditional sounding music he was doing at that time. When he got real experimental later on, his voice changed also. He uses it as more of a seperate instrument to add to the texture of the music. It is just another aspect of the overall sound he can experiment with.

yeah his voice on -Closing time- and -heart of a sat night- was a more standard way of singing, but swordfish trombones is possibly my all time fav recording

I'd consider myself as big a Tom Waits fan as anyone...but Ive never heard that. I'll have to do some research now.
