    Ok, I was all ready to say I HATE country music. But, those two are the exception. :)

    While George Jones is awesome, Johnny Cash is the best. I hate newer so-called "Country music" except Shooter Jennings. He is going to bring the good stuff back.

    Shooter is pretty bad. There is more than enough of the "good stuff" being played by great artists who are genuine in what they play: Jay Farrar, Ryan Adams, Gillian Welch, Neko Case.
    Using the word "methinks" in your message board posts doesn't make you look smart.

    You guys are forgetting about Neko Case. That woman can sing me to sleep anytime she wants. Although, I guess she's more on the "alternative country" side of things. That and her association with the New Pornographers.

    Can't believe I forgot to mention Steve Earle! He's definitely one of my personal faves. Johnny Cash, Willie, and Merle all kick ass as well. And didn't the Supersuckers put out a country record a couple of years ago? I think it's called "Must've Been High". I've always wanted to check that album out. Mike Ness of Social Distortion also did an amazing country/rockabilly album called "Cheating at Solitaire", which I highly recommend. And let's not forget about Dylan's folk/country material, as well as Springsteen's Nebraska, The Ghost of Tom Joad, and Devils & Dust.

    johnny cash once said something about country music being complete shit (see above), and that real country was about death and sorrow.. human suffering (among other things).

    remember before Walk The Line came out when country music hated Cash for making real music in the 90's?

    Willie Nelson is where its at. George Jones is good, but his live shows are weak. I saw him at the Fox Theatre and all he did were "meledys" of a bunch of his old hits and then he tried to sell everyone there some of his "George Jones Quality Bottled Water". George Jones water....WTF?? Your GEORGE JONES sell me some vodka or whiskey not water.

    Wilco/Jeff has moved WAY BEYOND the alt-country moniker. I just saw Son Volt two weeks ago and Jay hasn't. Not that that's a bad thing.

    Very true, but if you listen closely, the folk/country influence is still there. I saw Jeff do a solo acoustic show at the Calgary Folk Festival last summer and it was absolutely brilliant. But you're right. Wilco's music is much more experimental these days.

    I don't know if he qualifies as strictly country music, but Lyle Lovett is a personal favorite of mine. He's such a great talent and he always has such a great variety within his touring band.
