STP at Edgefest Last Weekend

A bit off topic, but I know there are plenty of STP fans in the Pit - here is quite the lukewarm review of their performance in Toronto yesterday...

"Something about Edgefest had obviously riled Stone Temple Pilots frontman Scott Weiland, too, who sashayed onstage in a black-leather suit in reasonably good vocal form to the first strains of "Big Empty" but soon sounded like he was deliberately sabotaging tunes like "Big Bang Baby," "Sour Girl" and "Tripping on a Hole in a Paper Heart" with sneeringly awful, off-key performances.

There were enough complaints from the stage about "psychedelic conditions" and the fact that it was "midday" (it was after 8), not to mention a sarcastic invitation to Linkin Park's Chester "Benson" (it's actually Bennington) to join STP for a tune, that one could deduce there might have been some bruised egos involved in Stone Temple Pilots' second-from-the-top Edgefest billing. Whatever the case, STP's fawning crowd didn't deserve to be treated with open contempt and to a half-assed set after standing in the rain in silence for a good chunk of the evening."

Ouch. Anyone there care to corroborate?

    STP was great, his voice is in fine form..
    and yeah he was pissed they were not closing, they should have been headliners..I hope to see them come back soon!!!

    i think the reviewer is an ass.

    1. Scott has been butchering half their songs all tour. on purpose. and no one knows why.

    2. Scott and Chester used to sing together every night on the Family Values tour back in 2001. Scott was clearly not being sarcastic.

    3. STP has been sucking in general thanks to Scott. This date was not an isolated incident.

    its over for STP. it has been for a long time. go back and listen to those studio cd's, with the exception of a few songs - the music just does not hold up. dare i say they are way overrated?

    I caught a show at the beginning of their tour in Cleveland. Maybe because it was one of their first few dates, but I thought they sounded good. I've seen them a few time too, not too much megaphone, good setlist. Also, Weiland was very chatty, he grew up around there he was saying. I guess I lucked out

    I saw them a few days ago in Montreal.

    Scott was ok. He was better on some songs than others. I'd say all in all STP put on a pretty decent show, but it didn't help that i was seeing them weeks after seeing Pearl Jam at MSG.

    On a side note, i was amazed at how small the crowd was in Montreal. The stage was at the mid point of the arena, so half the venue (Bell Center) was blocked off, and all of the 200 and 300 level. I'm guessing there wasn't more than 5,000 people there.

    I saw STP in Milwaukee on July 4th and I thought they were great. They even brought some Marines on stage and had one of them do the opening lines of "Dead and Bloated" on the megaphone. STP is still as good as ever.

    I've seen STP a few times now and I can honestly say that I was really disapointed with their performance on Saturday. They are a shell of their former selves.

    I expected alot more out of them. Their performance was lackluster at best.

    Their was no energy and a definate lack of stage presence. The crowd seemed utterly bored.

    If Weiland thought STP should have been the headliner...Perhaps he should have played with a little more passion.

    Yea saw them Saturday after coming back from MSG....sooo even though STP was a good show and really enjoyed it....no comparison...just showed how Kick A$$ PJ is in concert.

    Oh Fella's(PJ)....STP sold out in Houston.....if they can do it..so can you...right?

    I like STP, but they are not as great as the media make them out to be. Scott Wieland is one of the most overrated lead singers in history. He is always bitchin' about something. Last month he was bitchin' about the record deal they have, next month he'll want to be back with Velvet Revolver. STP are not a great live band, by any stretch. I doubt they are butchering their songs on purpose, they are butchering their songs cuz they aren't a good live band. I like their albums, but wouldn't see them live again.
