I am defining indie music as music that is indeed indie, and on an indie label (Devendra Banhart, Arcade Fire, Damien Rice etc…), and additionally it is for the sake of this discussion, music that is also on a major label but was previously on an indie label, or is just indie sounding (Modest Mouse, Death Cab)
So what is the best indie music around right now? Who is the best indie band?

Hmm, Indie has either lost its meaning, or gained a new one.
Indie used to mean Independant, and exactly that by definition. Now it's just the name of crappy generic british pop rock.no matter where you go,
 there you are.

Anything that wouldn't classify itself as 'indie'.
Modest Mouse is the best band 'indie' kids listen to. They should get a lot of credit for their part in inventing the sound indie rock has been falling short of for it's existence. Isaac Brock is brilliant, but almost everyone who's tried to rip him off have been terrible.
There are a lot of bands that get pulled into the genre like the Kings of Leon and My Morning Jacket that are just getting better and better. Get into the older bands that indie tries to stick it's label all over like Modest Mouse, Built to Spill, sometimes the Pixies, Sonic Youth, and the Velvet Underground.
As a general rule of thumb, any band with a singer who imitates Isaac Brock or a singer who imitates the guy from Bright Eyes imitating Isaac Brock is poison.Come on pilgrim you know he loves you..

i'm curious what you think those bands would be. also, how does conor oberst try to sound like isaac brock? bright eyes has been playing for as long as modest mouse as far as i know.
built to spill, kings of leon, my morning jacket, modest mouse, and bright eyes are all great bands.0

            Califone
 Dr. Dog
 Deadstring Brothers
Just to name a few I'm enjoying lately.
I can't leave this thread with out stating that I strongly dislike the implications that a.) there is such a thing as an indie sound (how does one sound independent?) and b.) that all or most newer indie bands either sound the same or are guilty of imitating one of several earlier independent bands. Not only is this unfair, but in most cases it's probably a sign that the speaker isn't taking much time to listen to the music he or she has chosen to criticize.0

people describe the sound of some bands as "indie"
i always thought it should have been just "indi"
