    Artist: The Mars Volta
    Album: Deloused In The Comatorium

Why: An energy I have missed for a very long time in rock and roll. This is a package band that can play salsa, hard rock and jazz all in one song... with a guitarist that blows your mind, singer that can tear it up, drummer that is the best i've seen in a long time and a bass that rumbles the earth.. not to mention other percussionists and sax players etc.. this band is the shit if you like your music long but full of life and colour with a touch psychedelic.. they played for 2.5 hours straight when i saw them live...

    Artist: Sigur Ros
    Album: Agaetis Byrjun

Why: angelic vocalist and a bunch of musicians that create soundscapes that can take you away into your own little world... whether you wanna feel like a child again and be free and happy or cry alone in your bedroom to clear your soul...

These are my favourite bands of the last couple years :)

Oh god yes! The Mars Volta are an amazing band, and you have to see them live to truly appreciate this. Second band I ever saw, and they blew me away. Only seen them once since then, but I want to see them again.
Can't wait for a new album. Frances The Mute was also a fantastic album, but nothing compares to DeLoused In The Comatorium.

    Artist: Billy Cobham

    Album: Spectrum

Why? After leaving the Mahavishnu Orchestra, Billy put together his own fusion group and put out his first solo album. Want to hear fusion jazz at its best? Look no further. Billy's first album as a solo artist paid hommage to his fusion roots at the same time paving a new direction. The light funk and smooth/space jazz directions he would go in the future weren't part of the picture yet. This disc is pure fusion jazz ripping. Billy owns the drums, and Tommy Bolin (RIP: died too early) rips it up something fierce on guitar. Listen to "Quadrant 4" and tell me Billy Cobham isn't king of all things drums. I dare you.

Love that album! Thanks for the reminder to go and listen to that one again.
    My suggestion is as follows->

    Artist: Jack Logan
    Album: Bulk
Why: He is a friend of Peter Buck of REM and he felt that Jack's music should be heard. One thing lead to another and a record company got a hold of some of Jack's music. And for once they decided not to change a thing and I am so glad of that! They sifted through 600 recordings spanning through 1979-1993 on 4-track cassettes and 4,8, and 16 track reel to reel to put 42 songs on this masterpiece of a double disc! From the first track "Fuck Everything" to the last "Town Crier" this album is just amazing. If you have any trouble finding this disc, PM me and I will see what I can do for you.

    Essential album: Zeitgeist

Why I Like Them: I really don't know how to describe them, but i've heard the term folk/punk thrown around a few times (if that's possible). They were a very popular band in the 90's that seem to have dissappeared into obscurity, but who are still around and touring. They even have their own festival.
Anyway, WHY I like them. Their music has such a positive attitude and a great message aswell. In a time where there is a lot of music without meaning, they mean a lot to me. The phrase "There's only one way of life, and that's your own" will always remain with me.

Well, though I could go on like for ages on this, first thing that comes to mind is one of my latest orders...

    Artist: Mclusky

    Essential Album: Do Dallas

Why I Like Them: Because they make me forget about The Strokes, The White Stripes, The Hives and all those bands that came out in recent years as so-called "rock saviours". First rock doesn't need anyone to save it, and second this band is really exciting, they have some of the wildest and more in your face approaches to rock music. Though they're a basic trio of bass/guitar/drums (and vocals, of course), sometimes they remind me of an industrial band, love their totally insane attitude. Yeah, they have a lot of Pixies influence, but actually who doesn't,. Their lyrics are something apart, witty and ironic towards the whole rock posse, such like "my band is better than your band, sing it, we have more songs than a song convention" or just look at the titles in "Do Dallas": "Fuck This Band", "The World Loves Us and Is Our Bitch", they don't take anything serious starting for themselves, I like that attitude. The vocals are completely frentic, the result of all that always gets me on a great mood... is time not to save rock, but to laugh at all the stupid things it has generated. Unfortunately since last year this group doesn't exist anymore. You can also get "Mcluskyism" an anthology released barely a few days ago. By the way, I found out about this band thanks to a member of this board that, it seems, doesn't come round here anymore. Great music for not so great times.

One of, if not the, greatest band in Mexican history. Second, they're not only from my country, they're from my neighbourhood. I've had the pleasure of frequently running into them at the movies, restaurants, etc. On a frequent basis, great guys who've been playing great music for the last 16 years.

Artist: La Maldita Vecindad y Los Hijos del Quinto Patio
    Album: "El Circo"
One of the great albums of the 90's, bar none, a little band from Mexico who impressed every critic worldwide with this release.

Just thought it'd be wise to point out the best band working in Mexico at the moment is called Austin TV, they play instrumentals, sort of like Mogwai but not as dense or dark. They've developed their own personality. I'll keep my comments on the two bands above, 'cause is not my intention to hurt any sensibilities. And other good one is Niña, kind of like more poppy but with a wide musical scope that goes from techno to sort of punk things.

They are still around. Released a new album this year called Truth and Lies, I think. Still a good band, who tour continuosly, and they have their own Beautiful Days Festival this summer aswell. I have yet to see them live, but I would love to, as i'm sure they'd still put on a great show. If they are in your area...check them out!

    Artist : KAYO DOT.

Essential Album : Dowsing Anemone With Copper Tongue.

Why I Like Them : Post-rock meets metal meets classical. The vocals go from whispers to operatic shrieks, the guitars go from barely audible to brutal riffs, the scratchy violins and jazzy trumpet and piano add more drama and dissonance. It might sound pretentious if it wasn't so breath-taking and emotionally engaging.

essential album is actually their only album. begins here
they have another coming out this week called imago
they are heavy, melodic and if you want a band that can hit you right in the chest and leave you a little winded. then TBE are for you. they're a four piece from brisbane, queensland. the first time i saw them live, the lead singer, clint had this blue stripe painted down the front of him from the top of his head down his bare torso to the waist of his pants. so if closing your eyes, headbanging and getting lost in the music is for you then listen to tbe.
