The Tragically Hip never made a good album.

They have like 1-3 AMAZING songs in each album then the rest of them suck. IMO they could compact their entire catalog into one FUCKING INCREDIBLE album and I wouldn't miss anything. I hate to even own all their album because I only listen to like 2 or 3 songs on each. They are really good at making plain TERRIBLE songs.

He's right, they never did make a "good" record. They are all "GREAT" records!!!!!

    What he said.
"I try my best to chug, stomp, weep, whisper, moan, wheeze, scat, blurt, rage, whine, and seduce. With my voice I can sound like a girl, the boogieman, a Theremin, a cherry bomb, a clown, a doctor, a murderer. I can be tribal. Ironic. Or disturbed. My voice is really my instrument."

  • I have listened to their entire catalog several times and have noticed that every song except the following are total bullshit:

    Opiated
    Little Bones
    Fiddlers Green
    On the Verge
    Fight
    Fully Completely
    Wheat Kings
    Grace, Too
    Greasy Jungle
    Fire In The Hole
    So Hard Done By
    Coconut Cream (haha)
    Poets
    Bobcaygeon
    Silver Jet
    Summer's Killing Us
    Lonely End of The Rink

Most of those songs are freaking incredible... I could easily do without EVERY other song made by the hip... They suck otherwise... They make so much filler in every album. Its a damn shame.

Out of all their albums I'd say Day for Night is their most consistent work and it stil has got a lot of crap in it (Thugs, Scared, an Inch an Hour, Emergency)
  • Funny, I always thought the hip were one of the few bands that can make albums that are perfect from start to finish. My favourite top 3 are fully completely, road apples and day for night. Music is like that though, it can sound perfect to one person while sounding like crap to another.

I think you're wrong, but I just want to say:

the fact that you think thugs, scared and emergency are crap, is insane to me.

Yup, I was thinking the same thing when he mentioned those songs. I realize The Hip aren't for everybody, and some folks just don't like them, but to say they haven't made a good album is crazy talk. Day for Night, Phantom Power, Fully Completely, Road Apples, Up to Here, Trouble at the Henhouse, and World Container are all brilliant records from start to finish. The Hip have been around for over two decades now, and the curse of longevity means that you're not gonna hit it out of the park every single time. I'll agree that they've released some albums that aren't as good as others which do have some filler on them, but name a veteran band who hasn't. I would argue that even a mediocre Hip song is still better than 99% of the shit you hear on the radio these days. If they weren't still making great music and evolving with each album, I would've lost interest in them years ago. 11 albums into their career and this band has yet to let me down. Judging from the clips we've heard from their recent recording sessions, the Hip just might have another classic on their hands when their new album comes out later this year. And I'll be first in line at the record store to buy it on release day, just like I have for the past 20 years.

Anyways, it's obvious this thread was started just to get a rise out of Hip fans, so I guess he's succeded. I'm done here. I say we all go back to posting in the massive 130-page Hip thread that we all love, which if I'm not mistaken is the longest tribute thread in the Other Music forum. Woohoo!

Did you think that changing the insult from 'retarded' to 'handicapped' would somehow soften the blow?

I hate, hate, hate the use of either word as an insult. I have no idea whether the OP is disabled but if they are, rather than insulting them I'd rather get them drunk and compare wheelchair stunts.

Agreed Mark. Twas an interesting response to someone not sharing his opinions for sure. Pathetic but interesting.

are you 'handicapped' or do you just like to get angry on other people's behalf?

anyway, the Hip are amazing, not much to argue here.

get over it people, i am sorry for saying that, okay.

i just love the hip, and he suckered me into a rash response.

Does it matter? Is it nosy to ask message board users to not be unnecessarily offensive just because someone says something that pisses them off? If you disagree and thing that the Hip are amazing, fine, there's no need to call anyone retarded or handicapped. Oh, and Restlesssoul, it wasn't a rash response. When I asked if it was necessary you "corrected" it to another snide remark. You'd think after 8000 posts you'd know that people acting like that makes message boards suck. I know damn well I've gotten on with you fine in the past so don't take this as an arsey post, I'm just saying.

It's not even like the OP said "The Tragically Hip fucking suck", they just stated that there's only a handful of songs they like. Are Hip fans all this touchy or just on the pit?

From what I've heard, they are a solid band and they have one song (Nautical Disaster) that I think is amazing but they aren't the second coming to me. I'm not "handicapped".

xSmacksoundX made a comment after my "snide" comment and didnt seem to say anything about the remark. the only two people who are offended by it, seem to be from London. Perhaps it is seen as much more derogatory in Europe than it is here.
