karma defect wrote:I saw Kaizers Orchestra, really cool live act. I never heard the album, witch is weird cause I do have the solo album made by Janove Ottesen. To be truthfull I must say that I never listend cause a friend told me, the album wasn't as good as the gig.
But still three cheers for Kaizers Orchestra.
Unfortunaly, I haven't seen them live yet. Really wanted to, but lots of different reasons just haven't made it possible yet.
But I an imagine it would be quite an experience!
I've got the solo album too, but haven't listened that much to it either.. I mean; it's a great pop-record, but seems a bit too "mellow" for me.. Really different from the stuff he does with Kaizers, that's for sure..
Not saying that's a bad thing though0 -
‘The phrase "There's only one way of life, and that's your own" will always remain with me.’
Ahh, I love that song and I quote that the odd time meself.
Anyway:
Artist: Josh Ritter
Essential Album: Hello Starling
Why I like him: Cross between Springsteen at times, Dylan at other times, the Waterboys and other folk rocky stuff at other times… and the opener on that album ‘Bright smile’ is simply gorgeous, for want of a better word. Even Joan Baez covered ‘Wings’.The Astoria??? Orgazmic!
Verona??? it's all surmountable

Artist: Café Tacuba
Albums: "Ré", "Cuatro Caminos".
One of, if not the, greatest band in Mexican history. Second, they're not only from my country, they're from my neighbourhood. I've had the pleasure of frequently running into them at the movies, restaurants, etc. On a frequent basis, great guys who've been playing great music for the last 16 years.
Artist: La Maldita Vecindad y Los Hijos del Quinto Patio
Album: "El Circo"
One of the great albums of the 90's, bar none, a little band from Mexico who impressed every critic worldwide with this release.I am so amazingly cool you could keep a side of meat in me for a month.0 -
Artist: Mother Love Bone (yeah I know they are popular here but there may be some new dudes)
Essential Album: Mother Love Bone (a.k.a Stardog Champion)
Why I Like Them: I literally fell in love with the song Chloe Dancer/Crown of Thorns. In my opinion it is the best song ever written (this is coming from someone who loves Gates of Eden by Dylan). From hearing that song I obtained a compilation of their official music, comprised of an E.P, Shine and their first and only album, Apple.
Since The band contained Jeff and Stone from PJ they obviously had a draw for me but it was the singer, Andrew Wood who captivated me. I truly think that Andy was a unique person. He wrote big, 80's rock songs but with obscure references to classical stories such as "she jezebel's daughter" and "she's like a brunnhilda" that made their music somewhat more interesting and vital than other music from that period. Man of golden words is truly the one song that I've heard that best sums up the different feelings that music can bring to a person. In fact, MOGW describes exactly what Chloe Dancer/Crown of thorns does to me when I hear it."I remember one night at Muzdalifa with nothing but the sky overhead, I lay awake amid sleeping Muslim brothers and I learned that pilgrims from every land — every colour, and class, and rank; high officials and the beggar alike — all snored in the same language"0 -
Artist: Pond
Album: Self-Titled or "The Practice Of Joy Before Death"
Why? 2 of the most overlooked grunge-era albums. Shamefully underrated. Just ignore the third album.
Artist: Poster Children
Album: "Tool Of The Man"
Why? Pop-punk at its very best. Period.Bright eyed kid: "Wow Typo Man, you're the best!"
Typo Man: "Thanks kidz, but remembir, stay in skool!"0 -

Artist: scarce
Essential Album: deadsexy (only album)
Why I Like Them:
there are a few live shows in bars that stand out for me...our lady peace and i mother earth together back around '96 ?...gord downie's solo show in halifax 2003...blue rodeo in halifax, 2003?
SCARCE is up there with THE best live show i have ever seen in a bar...the album is unbelievable...and hardly a person has heard of them...they were from rhode island, and only around for one album, unfortunately...
Artist: the heelwalkers
Essential Album: the heelwalkers
Why I Like Them:
balls out rock & roll...sex, porn, drugs, women, drugs, booze, women and more booze...like an ugly bastard child of motorhead and ac dc, and they are from halifax! if you like the hellacopters from sweden, you'll like the heelwalkers.
...notorious for live shows where they end up in underwear, often animal themed underwear...once saw them dress up in sombreros and moustaches and play the entire show without speaking a word of english...excpet the tune lyrics of course...always drunk off their arses. the maritimes' funniest and raunchiest hard rock export ever!
i remember they once got an album review that said the album was "a big pile of steaming horseshit"...they were quite proud of that one!, and had plans to put the review on a t-shirt...then they broke up shortly thereafter...0 -

sour pie is very indie...love it!0 -

that's right, baby!
i just thought of another one that some people from the board may not have tried:
Diana Krall "Love Scenes"
ok, i know she's married to Elvis Costello now, and sells Chryslers on TV... but she used to be a cool jazz singer!
i like it because my room mate used to pretend to do strip teases to "Peel Me A Grape"....
ahhhh.... university days....~~*~~ ...i surfaced and all of my being was enlightend... ~~*~~0 -

You’d really like Josh Ritter if you like Damien Rice – they’re pretty similar. Or the Devlins – they also had a song in Closer, during the lapdance scene. Not one of their best but it’s ok. I sent evenkat one of their cd’s and she absolutely loves it. She’s had people asking about it too. It’s very easy listening, kinda U2 lite, but he’s got a much nicer voice than Bono. The Astoria??? Artist: The Mars Volta
Album: Deloused In The Comatorium
Why: An energy I have missed for a very long time in rock and roll. This is a package band that can play salsa, hard rock and jazz all in one song... with a guitarist that blows your mind, singer that can tear it up, drummer that is the best i've seen in a long time and a bass that rumbles the earth.. not to mention other percussionists and sax players etc.. this band is the shit if you like your music long but full of life and colour with a touch psychedelic.. they played for 2.5 hours straight when i saw them live...
Artist: Sigur Ros
Album: Agaetis Byrjun
Why: angelic vocalist and a bunch of musicians that create soundscapes that can take you away into your own little world... whether you wanna feel like a child again and be free and happy or cry alone in your bedroom to clear your soul...
These are my favourite bands of the last couple years|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
