Lets get the word out on great artists and let their music live on. I personally am really interested in what people are gonna post here. I will pick some of this stuff you guys reccomend for sure!
This is where we can share our secret bands or artists that maybe a lot of people dont know how good they are or some have just forgotten about them as they have slipped into rock obscurity. But they rock our worlds!!!

Artist: (name here)

Essential Album: (best album to get into the band/artist)

Why I Like Them: (BRIEF description)

So Here's Mine.

Artist: T. REX, aka Marc Bolan

Essential Album: ELECTRIC WARRIOR

WHY I LIKE HIM:

His albums and music are peace and lovey with trippy psychadelic 70s groove rock throughout. His catalogue goes much much deeper than his commercial "Bang A Gong" success. He's an amazing guitarist and his shit is great for when you want to rock out, but not that much. He's dead. His girlfriend drove their car into a tree. I have found hours of good stuff by him and maybe you will too!!!

    I love this thread idea!

    Artist: The Levellers

    Essential album: Zeitgeist

Why I Like Them: I really don't know how to describe them, but i've heard the term folk/punk thrown around a few times (if that's possible). They were a very popular band in the 90's that seem to have dissappeared into obscurity, but who are still around and touring. They even have their own festival.
Anyway, WHY I like them. Their music has such a positive attitude and a great message aswell. In a time where there is a lot of music without meaning, they mean a lot to me. The phrase "There's only one way of life, and that's your own" will always remain with me.

    Artist - Matthew Good Band

    Essential Album - Underdogs

    Why I like them -

Matt Good is an incredibly talented songwriter and 'Underdogs' rocks hard at sometimes and pauses for heart felt ballads in others. For me MGB is one of those bands that defines what it means to be Rock n' Roll. It's some of the most emotionally driven music I have ever heard and like Pearl Jam, I'll gladly share it with anyone. If you really get into this artist you may like 'Beautiful Midnight' more than 'Underdogs' but its really the best place to start. I really couldn't imagine my music collection without the Matthew Good Band.
    Which came first,
the bad idea or me befallen by it?

Thomas Dybdahl - That great October sound ( singer/song writter, with band)
Motorpsycho - Trust us ( every album a different face )
Explosions in the sky - The earth is not a cold place (Sweat trippin' )
Blonde redhead - Misery is a butterfly (pure beauty, like elfs would sing)
Shipping news - Very soon and in good company (post rock)

  • Gordon Lighfoot: Love his voice; love his songwriting; love his backing musicians. He is sadly overlooked or forgotten these days but in the 70s he was everywhere even performed his epic "Wreck of The Edmund Fitzgerald" on SNL around 76 I guess. His songs tell stories, address issues, and often express the sadness of love gone wrong etc.

    Essential album: 1974's "Sundown"

Hey! Two norwegians on ur list. Well done ;)
Motorpsycho are a pretty cool band, not too much fan of mr. Dybedahl tough, although he's got some decent songs. Heard the stuff he did in The National Bank? I would say that's his best work..

    Artist: Kaizers Orchestra
    Essential album: Maestro

    Why I like them:
They're this brilliant mix between different genres; gypsy-music, rock, and bits of tons of more.. But they're not like this alternative band who's got to make the music just so it can be special, it seems like it just comes naturally for them. Their music's got tons of energy and they've created this fiction cowboy/war/mafia universe, where every record has its own story to tell within these universes. Their music is just so filled with energy and... well, trhey're just so damn great :D I really, really dig them! Plain and simple.

Oh, and Tom Waits had their debut record "ompa til du dør" on his top 10 list of best albums..

I saw Kaizers Orchestra, really cool live act. I never heard the album, witch is weird cause I do have the solo album made by Janove Ottesen. To be truthfull I must say that I never listend cause a friend told me, the album wasn't as good as the gig.

But still three cheers for Kaizers Orchestra.

    Artist: architecture in helsink

Essential Album(s): fingers crossed (2004) / in case we die (2005)

Why I Like Them: multi-instrumental band that makes an indie sound that goes easy on the ears. sometimes reminds me as a sweet, happy, funnier version of arcade fire (esp. the vocals) but they started the band before them. check their web site, it's very cute.

i discover them when i was watching tv and i saw one ad that had 'it's 5' playing in the background. it got stucked in my head for a week.
so i decided to go after the band.

  • Artist: The Church

    Essential Album(s): Starfish (1988)

Why I Like Them: They have an amazing ability to create an atmosphere. Starfish is their most accessible record. There are some hints of The Cure, R.E.M. and U2, but they are their own band.

They've been around for 25 years and are still playing the music they want. I respect them for that.
