I've been checking out some videos on Youtube of AIC with William Duvall on vocals - he's a good singer, but for me it just isnt Alice without Layne Staley at all. Layne always brought such a dark quality to the band, with Duvall its just him singing the songs whereas with Layne you could see he was in pain, and it really came from the heart.

I really dont like the way Jerry, Mike and Sean are touring again with this guy - its wrong, and an insult to the greatest rock vocalist of his generation. I suppose its nice to see the songs being brought to a new generation of listeners, but if they decide to record a new album under the Alice name with Duvall on vocals, I'll be very upset and angry.

Anyone else have any thoughts on it?

This is disgusting. What happened to Layne is awful, however he was not Alice In Chains, neither was Jerry, AIC were a GROUP. Jerry wrote most of their material, so in what way does he not deserve to play the music he, for the most part, created? In what way is it not a fitting tribute to his dead friend by bringing the music he created with him to people? I am sick of this kind of talk. If anything, the way in which you are talking is wrong, and an insult to Layne.

Maybe Stone and Jeff should have found someone after Andy passed and we could have seen Mother Love Bone.... no wait that would be pretty f'd up to Andy and the music. NO LAYNE NO AIC. I don't give a f!@# who wrote what. NO LAYNE NO AIC!!! This just in.... Mike wants to tour with Mad Season and is looking for a new singer to replace Layne. Give me a break.

Yea dude, I do think your ridiculous. Your looking at this with your own feelings, emotions and hangups , and expecting 3 guys to cater to what you feel about the situation, because you have memories of Layne Staley.

Your like one of these people who thinks he should be able to tell an athlete when to retire, or gets upset when someone leaves college early for the NBA.

It is their lives, and they have the right to earn some money with the music and band that they created.

I'll say it again, they knew Layne better than anyone, and I'm sure they are a lot more emotional about the situation and sensitive to Layne's memory than any of the fans have a right to be. So if they are ok with it, then you should be too if you were/are a real fan.

Actually they have spoke on occasion about doing that with Lanegan doing the vocals.

I see you live in charlotte. I used to live there about 3 years ago did you see Jerry play (with William) on his degradation trip tour at the free concert downtown? Or about 4 years ago when he played at the tremount and closed the show with Rain when i die?
both shows were awesome and william was there doing the AIC songs. give em a chance man it sounds good.

You got it all wrong cupcake. To call someone ridiculous behind a computer is kind of chump like. I guess you are a real tough guy. The topic is thoughts on the new AIC and these are mine. I did'nt single anyone out beacause they support what Jerry is doing. You singled me out not once but twice so fuck you chump.

From what I heard they were hoping for a second album that would be a double album. One with Mark and the other with Layne . I am not sure how accurate that is. And to answear your question I did not see Jerry here in Charlotte.

Well, I have, but then again my comment was far from the most negative in this thread ;) I saw Alice during the most recent tour and also saw Duvall with Jerry on his solo tour a couple of years ago (basically half the set was Alice tunes). I do think he has a good voice and that his voice has a likeness to Layne's, but his voice is clearly not Layne's nor is he in my opinion nearly as powerful a frontman. That said, I'd rather them tour with Duvall than not at all and I had fun at both shows, so keep on touring I say!
    That's cool :)
I wasn't trying to attack anyone and my post wasn't directed at any person in particular. Just glad to hear that you seemed to enjoy the "new" AiC as much as I did. And you are so right about it being better that they tour with DuVall than not touring at all.

NO LAYNE NO AIC. Hey danielson you think my comment is ridiculous? That is pretty lame on your part to point out one persons opinion and label it. NO LAYNE NO AIC!!! They are nothing but a tribute band without Layne. I think Journey and Bad Company are out there without their original singer... I got it maybe Jerry's new tribute band can join them. That would be sweet. See you there danielson.

I'm finding it hard to understand your point, OF COURSE AiC touring with a new singer is a tribute!!!!

Jerry and co don't need to make any more money, they sold shit loads in the early-mid 90's. This is about celebrating the music and bringing it to a new audience, nothing more, nothing less.

there´s not AIC without LAyney Stanley
when a band lost one their members especially their vocalist , stop playing as a band it´s the right desicion....... many bands had done that..

led zeppelin lost jason bonham- they stopped
nirvana lost kurt cobain- they stoped
joy division lost ian curtis- they stoped

Cantrell can do what dave grhol or joy division members did, formed a new band with a new name.....

AC/DC lost Bon Scott.....and they went on to make one of the most successful albums of all time...
The Stones lost a Brian Jones face down in a pool....good thing for us they didn't stop or we would not have a lot of the music they went on to make...

point is, the only ones who can make the decisions are the remaining band members, and there is nothing that says they cannot be successful if they continue to make music together.

Amen. I really am done with this subject, people can still cling on to their copy of Dirt and refuse to move on, that's fine - al I know is that the show I went to a few weeks ago was mind-blowing stuff, the energy and emotion in that room was incredible, and it definitely ranks in my top 5 gigs of all time, and since I've been going to gigs for 11 years, that is quite a few shows.

in ac dc case, when their first singer died, i think they just released 2 albums as a band, it´s not the same situation with AIC a band who release many albums, box sets, live and an unplugged, i suggest to keep the aic idea intact....

or would you like to see pearl jam, new soundgarden with another singer, i don´t think so....
  • you fuckers have to have this and that perfect about music to like it? so many of you have these little "ideas" of what something should be. don't let your "ideas" ruin music. that is just sad. so many people have rediculous rules and guidelines and ruin something they could really enjoy. music - either you like it or you don't. i'm dissapointed as anyone that i'll never get to see AIC with staley, but i'm not going to needlessly cut short the enjoyment of seeing them with another singer. that is as close as i'll ever get. I saw page and plant in 98. sure it wasn't led zeppelin, but it was one of the very best concert experiences i've ever had. so go on and be negative, but i wonder how "ideas" and "standards" effect you. people waste so much time and restrict themselves so much. ahhhhhhhhhmen.

b.t.w. - wouldn't be great if page, plant and jones got together with dave groll (can't remember how to spell his name) and did a zed zeppelin tour?

dave grhol playing with them it would be great, but you can´t compare a drummer with a vocalist, many drummers can replace bonham ´´with all respect´´just reading some papers... for an vocalist that it´s not enough...

i´m getting tired of this, do wathever you want, fuckin sellouts...

Alice in Chains is definitely one of my favorite bands. I never had the chance to see them play live. Now that Layne is gone, I have no desire to see or hear them at all. I cannot imagine anyone singing those songs other than Layne. No one will be able to sing Junkhead, Them Bone, Dirty Chair, or Dirt and bring that emotion like Layne. To me this is like Billy Corgan saying that Smashing Pumpkings is back together even though it is just him and James. No matter what name they use, it will never be what it was. It is the current day equivilent of Lynyrd Skynyrd or the Beach Boys still touring, it is not the band and it does a diservice to the memory of what those bands were.
I got scratches all over my arms, one for each day since I fell apart.
