I fucking HATE people sometimes (my night at the Smashing Pumpkins concert)

So I went to see the Pumpkins in LA on Wednesday night. Great show, the band was on FIRE, amazing setlist (Bodies, 1979, Soma, Disarm, Zero, Ava Adore, Crestfallen...the list goes on).

BUT...

WHY THE FUCK DO PEOPLE GO TO CONCERTS JUST TO GET DRUNK, ACT STUPID, AND IGNORE THE ACTUAL FUCKING MUSIC?? My girlfriend and I were sitting in front of a bunch of meatheads who were drunk before the show even started. Low and behold, about 4 songs into the set, two blonde girls came and stood next to them. The ENTIRE rest of the show the drunk guys and blonde sluts spent TALKING, taking pictures (not of the band or the stage, but of each other), and making out -- ALL with their backs facing the stage. As hard as we tried to ignore it, it's pretty impossible when they were standing right in front of us and TALKING -- which was especially irritating during the slower songs.

    I agree on all counts. :( :)

  • yeah i hate it when that happens. you totally want to be the fun police and just wish that you could have security throw them out for sucking.
    {if (work != 0) {
    work = work + 1;
    sleep = sleep - work * 10;}
    else if (work >= 0) {
    reality.equals(false);
    work = work +1;
    }system("pause");
    return 0;}
  • I've experienced this more in the past few years than ever before.

    I really want to go up to people and be like, "What the FUCK?!? You really paid $90+ to fucking talk amongst yourselves the ENTIRE time?"

    My Morning Jacket at the Greek in September was the worst...the entire front section was one big chatterbox.

    I was at the show, too, Walkunafraid...awesome time! But yeah, people suck.

    Out of all the concerts I've been to, 311 was easily the worst crowd wise. The older the band the better the crows IMO. I wouldn't expect that from a smashing pumpkins show.

    Yep I'm hearing that.......where's my fucking gun.

    I am increasingly experiencing this much more at gigs.It was always pretty much a given at weekend gigs but now any night seems ok to get pissed before the gig and continue drinking/talking through it.
    I was at a gig on Tuesday night and there were SO MANY drunk people I could hardly believe it.I was livid by the end.People weaving through the crowd holding a tray of beers then getting pissed off when some gets spilled.
    And don't even start me on "gig girlfriend's" they are always in pairs .......... a couple of stupid bints who go along to a gig to hang around their boyfriends neck kissing them at every opportunity.They know fuck all about the band or their music and don't care.Then the one solitary song that they known turns them into fucking "superfan" dancing around screaming and singing,word imperfectly.As soon as that song is over they resume their stupidness.

    Jeez I'm glad I got rid of that bile.

    I experienced nearly this same thing during all of the opening bands for Neil Young this year. People shut up when Neil came on stage though. It was pretty damn annoying, especially since some of these bands' slower songs are my favourites.

    Agree on all counts. The 2 worst I've seen were during
    1. Muse. They break out Ruled By Secrecy (quiet piano song) and you can hear nothing but crowd noise in the background. Unreal.
    2. I saw NIN in '05, GA show and I'm standing 5th row getting smashed against the crowd. Assume its gonna be nothing but hardcore fans up there and of course, there are 3 dbags right behind me. They confuse Right Where it Belongs, not only as Hurt, but as 'that johnny cash song'
    Yep, I fucking hate people.

  • This evokes something I hate about going to sporting events too. I was at the Panthers-Packers game in Green Bay last weekend and I swear, as soon as kickoff starts, there are people coming down the stairs to the left of me and already going to get food or whatever the fuck.

    First of all, why are they going to do this when the game is actually starting? They were sitting up there - and when the action actually happens THEN they choose to leave?!

    Second of all, as they are going down the stairs, they often decide to pause to watch what's happening on the field - obscuring my view by blocking the lines of sight formed by the walkways.

    Listen fucker, if you decided your 6 dollar nachos were important enough to leave when the game is ACTUALLY going on, then you don't care enough about the play. Move your ass and quit blocking the views of those who care to see it.
    Are we getting something out of this all-encompassing trip?
  • I tend not to go to that many gigs for that reason.....

    Gigs are usually full of drunk cunts who show little to no respect for others who may actually be there to see the music....

    I know some people dont like you taking photos at gigs, but i took a couple at Mogwai last month, and one of the times i held my camera up this wasted girl who was falling about with her mate totally fucked and not watching the music put her hand over my camera and said 'Mogwai dont like photos!' I just replied, 'Mogwai dont like fucking arseholes either.' Truth is you get them at every gig, and its just your luck whether they are near you or not.
    People say im paranoid. Well, they dont say it, but i know that's what they are thinking.
  • I had the same kind of thing when I saw Kings Of Leon a few months back. A group of drunk guys all in a circle facing each other screaming the lyrics to every song at each other - they barely even looked at the stage - I wanted to kill them!

    In fact, my last Pearl Jam show at Wembley, everybody in front of me spent the vast majority of the show with their mobile phones in the air (like they were going to get any decent video footage on a phone!) meaning that loads of people behind couldn't see very well. I wouldn't have minded so much, but considering the absolute nightmare it was to get the fanclub only standing tickets, I would have preferred been seated and actually been able to see.

    Cell phones at shows are bad, maybe 1 in 100 cell phone camera's actually take a good video anyways.

    The KOL concert I went to was terrible. There were 16 year olds texting all night.

    Except 311 has been around just as long as the Pumpkins have.

    Hell yes!!

    What also irritates the hell out of me is people who decide to get so fucked up on alcohol/drugs/whatever and decide that not only should they be moshing, but that they have to try and kick/elbow/push everyone around them who obviously aren't into doing that shit.

    Although I'm not into it myself, if people want to mosh that's absolutely fine - but you can do it respectfully - no need to end up bruising and kicking the shit out of the people around you.

    I love being up front and rocking out (while giving the band and the music my full attention), but I'm pretty short and have back issues so the last thing I want is someone smashing into me every 2 seconds and using my shoulders/back as leverage for their elbows- have some respect people!!

    I was at Vikings-Bears last weekend and I was taking a piss during Bernard Berrian's 99 yard touchdown. :(

    good to read a reasonable view.......i am surprised people are surprised by the behavior of others at a rock show.

    seriously...of all the places to act like an idiot, i would place rock show in second place, right behind mardi gras.

    This problem has become an epidemic....maybe Congress will step in. :D

    P.S. Some people really need to abstain from concerts...if all they want to do to talk with their buddies.

    Weezer crowds are pretty bad in my experience...and don't even get me started on warped tour (i haven't gone in years though)

    What I really hate is people who go and then proceed to try to talk on their cell phone through the entire concert. WTF? You just paid $75 to stand in a crowded building with loud music and talk loudly to your friends next to you and on your cell phone?
    It's one of the reasons I don't go to movies anymore, either. Too many people just sitting around and talking, not even paying attention to the movie they're paying to see. I don't get it.

    I had a similarly shitty experience at SP concert last year. And I've already ranted about it here, but it needs to be done again...

    So the band was great... and I would have been able to appreciate them much more if not for these two drunken assholes in front of me...

    One guy is particular was the worse culprit. He kept shouting absolutely stupid shit like "SMASH MY PUMPKIN!" (he belted this out at least three times) and he and his buddy were doing this ridiculous slam dancing. I'm all for rocking out, but this shit was way over the top, and kept distracting me from the band and their music.
  • sounds a little like a Pearl Jam show
    "All the rusted signs we ignore throughout our lives"--Ed
  • I was at a Pumpkins show in Chicago recently and there were a bunch of 20 somethings yr old women to the right and behind me none of who shut their fucking pieholes the entire concert. I had to buy the frickin CD of the show just to find out what I might have heard.

    But what is increasingly pissing me off is people who cant last thru a damn 4 minute song without giving in to the urge to whip out their blackberries to fire off or read some text messages. WHAT THE FUCK??? Get an attention span or get totally stoned so you forget about the damn things or something. At a Pumpkins show in August at Hammond I was in the 2nd row at a general admission show and some moron who had waited hours to be in the front row kept holding his blackberry up blocking my view until I threatened to permanantly implant it in his ass.

    Yet usually if you start a thread asking people to please not be such assholes that they ruin the show for everyone else it usually turns into yu getting flamed by morons saying they'll do whatever they want without any basic understanding that society only works if people don't piss each other off so much that we all go batshit.
  • 1 word....

    EDDIE!!!!

    makes me want to kill people.
    You can't spell "dumb" without DMB
  • One of the reasons I love being front row is to be as isolated from the rest of the crowd as well. Of course, there are always the assholes who feel they have the right to push and shove their way to the front, but I'm pretty comfortable sending them a physical message to fuck off in such cases. Usually the worst thing about any gig I attend is the audience.
