I got a M Kid's Jam shirt for my son last year. He was 8 at the time. He is about average size for his age. It fit fine.

Medium would fit well. It fits well on my son and he's 7.
But if you are to spend some serious money... I'd go large.
I just got him a RedSox jersey for 70 bucks and I bought a large.
... and the will to show I will always be better than before.
