i love this forum!!! i lurk around alot n never really post but still . the people here are pretty nice from what i have read. the chris place is not that cool anymore b/c all the cool people are leaving and yea all that shhhtuff...lol . i have to admit the new album is not a piece of shit. but to be honest its not a gem either. ok this is my experience. i first listened to the songs and i was like "wtf!!! this musics giving me diarrhea!" ive been taking speech at summer skool n they talked bout culture shock. n thats kinda wat happened to me. first i was SHOCKED lol... yea after a while i was like "hmmmm was it really THAT bad???" and it was,that time i think blood came out , but that was because i very into superUnk at the time. after a few days I chilled out and took another listen and YAY! no bowel movements.. but seriously.. the songs ive heard have grown on me a little and theyre ok to listen to . these songs dont give me that burst of energy like seasons or anything but theyre ok. i mean there are songs that if i hear them , i want to shoot my brains out and these arent like that. obviously not top cornell material. i like carry on better.. but this record isnt that bad as people make it out to be. i kinda like some of the stuff and sometimes i find the tunes stuck in my head lol. ima wait til the record comes out tho cuz it might be better if listened to it as a whole. also i dont like those ppl at the chris forum because they think everything is perfect on scream and the new chris. its Annoying. they sound like sheep! baaaaah lol. i like the new album but come on guys no need to be mindless its not perfect.(i like scream its cool, superunknown i LOVE and its like an orgy for my ear or somethinglol) when he said he was going for RnB i thought of something like Lenny Kravitz for some reason n i thought that would be pretty awesome. but hey its still cool. i kinda see this timbaland thing as sorta a side project from his solo career if that is even possible. sorry guys this post is so long . its just im kinda confused about this new cd. i find it a love hate kinda deal sometimes. also i feel like i can truely express myself here without being treated like a traitor or some kind of bad person.

The response to my review has been mostly defensive -- i.e., "Cornell's just trying something new; he's an AWESOME performer still, so, come on, cut him some slack." Personally, I refuse. Carry On was trying enough, though I've grown to like some of it for its relative sincerity. This new shit is borderline unbearable, like having your parents, held under gunpoint, tell you they don't love you anymore. Anyone who insists on believing this new project is just a matter of Cornell being "bored" or whatever is legitimately delusional and should appropriately hold little weight to their arguments otherwise.

"So it's all for the cash, is it? And you know this.....how? How do you know he isn't just bored? He's a creative, intelligent man and he's often talked about needing to make frequent changes and try different things musically rather than get "stuck in a corner". It's interesting that a lot of this adverse criticism is coming from people on the Pearl Jam forum - they're a great band but they've been making approximately the same sound for about 18 years. But what's been released so far is plenty to indicate that Cornell has surrendered too much responsibility -- and, accordingly, credibility -- for the final product, which makes him an out-and-out sellout, as far as I'm concerned. What a way to tarnish a legacy.

Pearl Jam aren't the most adventerous of bands but I don't think they've had the same sound for 18 years. No Code is the most obvious example, but just look at their previous three records - Binaural, Riot Act, Pearl Jam. Yes, they're all in the confindes of rock but within that you've got pyschedelic, punk, sometimes even folk. There's a fine line between "experimenting" (which, btw, does not neccesairly mean an indication of actually, you know, good music) and completely changing genres to try and court a new audience.
This isn't even a gradual change, really. I know they've been hints of RnB here and there, but to go from three full blown rock records in the space of 2005-2007 to a contemporary* RnB sound in 2008 is slightly jarring.
*Cornell has mentioned his love for soul singers like Al Green and Otis Redding. So why is he wasting his time with contemporary RnB, with it's going-to-be-dated synths and tinny drum machines?

You're damn right he is. He even produces our candypop Dima Bilan who won on this Eurovision contest in Finland this year. He was with Plushchensko (ice-dancer) and some guy playing on a Stradivari violin. So he won not because of his crappy song but because of the show those other two put on.

Chris has always had a phenomenal voice and range. He just needs to have someone around to say "hey, you're being a big pussy." That person can be Kim Thayil, Mike McCready, even Tom Morello (even though I wasn't a huge audioslave fan). In his solo projects, up to this point, that has been sadly missed. There was some good stuff on Euphoria Morning, but it was still pretty wimpy. I really dug the acoustic tour he did and the Live In Sweden boot that circulated. I was very excited before that last album release and so very disappointed by the album. It's like Chris has this blues streak, but the instrumentaton is so vanilla that it sounds lame. Ain't got no sauce.
It'd be great if while Ed was doing this solo thing, he and Mike got together. I'm not asking for TOTD 2, but I think they would churn out some good material.

Why do you have to repect him? Who respcts David Lee Roth... or Eddie Vedder for that matter? You like their great songs and respect their talents. I'd say this album still has the potential to be better than Avocado, but not Riot Act at all.

if cornell fans think he could do better or anything close to 'riot act' at the moment, they are even more deluded than they appear to be.
Why do you have to repect him? Who respcts David Lee Roth... or Eddie Vedder for that matter? You like their great songs and respect their talents. I'd say this album still has the potential to be better than Avocado, but not Riot Act at all.
So now you don't respect him as a musician, but you respect his music from before, or not?
