Ledbetter -- Ruined for me

I hate to say it, but I really dislike this song for no other reason that it signals the end for 99% of their shows. This used to be one of my faves WAY back when, but now, I cringe when it is played. Although I do prefer that they keep this as the closer and not ruin anymore songs for me, I still like the occasional RITFW closer to mix things up! :>)

Anyone else feel the same way?

I love it as a closer. They close with plenty of other stuff, and alotta times YL is just tacked on to play one more song.

I'd honestly rather not hear RITFW ever again. I've seen it at half the shows I've attended. I know it will close night 2 in Chitown, though with the opening band on stage.

Not really. While it pretty much always signals the end of the show, it always seems like the perfect way to end the show. Especially when Mike tags little wing or star spangled banner. They cant play forever...

i like this as a closer ... i love how the rest of the band just watches mike at the end and matt comes out from behind the drums ... gives them an opportunity to soak up our undying adoration ...

The last several times I've seen it, it was after a song I figured was the closer, like Baba or Alive. So I actually saw it as a bonus and nice come-down.

They may do it as a tribute for the men and women overseas, for us to think of them. Also, maybe it's so people don't stick around chanting "pearl jam, pearl jam, pearl jam" to try to get them out because it's now so well known to be for the end of the show. It's become identical to Ferris Bueller's "it's over... go home" line at the end of the credits of that movie.

...I think they should open a show with it, and immediately after say "thank you, goodnight!" and see if people out of habit leave the venue.

i've said it before... yellow ledbetter is mariano rivera. it is always the correct way to close. ritfw, alive and fuckin up never feel like a good change of pace to me. they make me think the venue had a curfew, like the show shouldn't be over.

i think 2000 miles blues would be amazing as a closer
  • yokeyoke Posts: 1,440
I think at this point we expect it to be the end. I have seen them a whole hell of a lot of times and maybe only 2/3 times did they not close with it. Its true that its the wind down song and its nice when the lights come up and all that. To me, even though I can't stand to hear it sometimes I still love it(if that makes any sense). I don't know if the show is the same without it. I like that they don't leave on an Upbeat song.

I agree with the opinion that it is the perfect closer, and it seems like they are saying thanks to us for being a good audience when they play it. :D

Also, it makes me feel respected. We know it is the end and don't have to scream forever, not knowing if they are going to come back and play another encore or not. I will still yell and scream in appreciation, of course!!! But IMHO I like to know it is the end.

I like YLB fine enough, but I frankly don't like that it ends with a Mikey solo.
I'd rather see the whole band rock the end of the show, so I'll go with RITFW.

I've had Indifference twice and one time it was fitting for the night to end
on a mellow note, but the second time not as much.

Im really tired of it closing the show as well. But I dont blame them, its my fault for seeing them over 30 times.

    "parting is such sweet sorrow"

YL is awesome as a closer and yeah even when i hear the studio version it fills me with that feeling that something is coming to an end... its beautiful.

I also love RITFW too, leavin a show with that riff pounding on the inside of your skull is amazing and makes me not be able to think straight for about half hour after a show.

I once attended a show where we got a song AFTER Ledbetter.

That's how badass a crowd we were.

  • This song could never be ruined for me. I actually get more upset when it doesn't end a show because I keep expecting to hear it. I feel like a missed a song when it doesn't close the show. I think its more like Trevor Hoffman than Rivera, but then again that just might be cuz I'm a Brewers fan!

at the end of the day op has a point, although pj mix up there sets, largely they play the same songs
its fair to say we all would like to hear some rarer tracks, and thats not a shot at the band, im happy whatever they play...
we have a new album comin so im sure things will change... :D

Seen over 30 shows, and the ones without ledbetter closing didn't feel complete. I can see how it could get annoying but I think that song is pure 'pearl jam'.
  • Brisk.Brisk. Posts: 11,567
I like it, even though its played so much. I've become pretty sick of hearing do the evolution and other songs like that but yellow ledbetter never seems to be cringing for me, maybe becuase its an improv song or something and you never know what they could bust out i.e little wing. Wish they would play it like it is on the cd though, Eddie sings it all different.

yeah i hate to say it too, but this not only signals the last song of the show... but when the first chords are played it marks the time that we run to the parking lot to try to beat the traffic...

wish they would take it easy on crazy mary too... back in 98 when they played it at msg 98 it was such a treat cause it wasnt played to hell
it's largely due to eddie that i liked to jump off of things as a child...

Still find it so amazing how people think getting home faster is more important than seeing pearl jam. You payed money to see the band so why not stay, hell its only one night of the year so what? your going to be home a few hours later just because you saw Pearl Jam.

Funny how people complain about PJ not playing or even in their state etc so they have to make a lot of effort to go see them but when they do people go home early becuase they want to beat traffic...

People should just be smart and get some beers, a bbq and just spin some pearl jam cds.
