The next time you step in front of the camera for your driver's license photo, you might want to skip the forced smile. Four states have urged drivers to stop grinning because it interferes with anti-fraud protections on driver's license pictures, USA Today reported.
Arkansas, Indiana, Nevada and Virginia tell drivers to keep neutral expressions when they get their license photos taken. The states are using software that compares new license photos with hold ones. Grinning can mess up the facial recognition technology.

I don't usually smile anyway but damn what if I wanted to. I figured Virginia would get in on this with many more to come.

Oh please if they were seeking some murder/rape suspect and wanted sort out a smiling face to be recognized. I'M SURE they'd be able to figure out who's smiling/grinning at them. :D

Just to mess with them I'd smile till they ran out of film or whatever digital card they use.

I don't get it. Why would they be comparing an old to a new license anyway? Also, if you're that upset about your "freedom" how about the fact that we have to get licenses in the first place?

No different than you having a license to be a lawyer or me having a license to be a nurse. I'm not that upset about this but more about how other states may add this ridiculous requirement.

Funny, just yesterday I was flying out of Ohio and the security guy told me: Oh, come on, you gave the Motor Vehicle people a much better smile than you are giving me!

He knew of no ban on smiles. In fact, he said they found out that the smile is the most consistent feature of your face across the years. I don't think it's true (botox, anyone?), but he seemed really convinced.
... and the will to show I will always be better than before.

Exactly. Getting a drivers licence is not some kind of a fundamental freedom. I mean if people are going to complain that they don't have the freedom to smile, why not complain that you don't have the freedom to wear a mask in the picture (or opt out of the picture all together) or that you don't have the freedom to withold your address?

i was specifically told not to smile the last time
i got my license renewed in Ohio a couple of years ago.

    seems logical. and appropriate.

  • I'll never understand the "freedoms" that people whine about not having.

I remember when Boston (I think) banned trans fats in restaurants and people all whined about how their "freedom to eat what I want" was being taken away... like.. people... that's poison.. your body can't break them down and they kill you slowly... you want the "freedom" to be fed poison instead of something that isn't going to kill you? Are you high?

I remember people complaining about how Kellogs was taking High Fructose Corn Syrup out of some cereal and people went nuts that their "freedom" to have what they wanted was being taken away.

I think there are even people who complain about pirates who sell those bootleg DVD movies being arrested because they want the "freedom to buy what I want."

You want the "freedom" to smile on your driver's license? WTF? That's like asking for the "freedom" to have the back of your head photographed instead your face.

Of course... when I talk about my rights as a gay man, I'm told to "cut the drama" or told "I just haven't heard enough good arguments for it."

People really don't understand what "freedom" is.
