Santa Cruz
What a pleasant piece of fluff/belly button lint this little ditty is. Sure is getting a lot of airplay - which I find to be unfortuneate because it sounds very beneath the lofty standards of Pearl Jam. Last Kiss, watch out!

Only place I've heard it is on my computer, mp3 style.
I'll agree it's no hit single. And it wasn't supposed to be. It was supposed to be on a piece of vinyl that half the world can't even listen to, because we don't own record players.
That said, I've been listening to the Ed solo version of this song since long before the Easter Single came out. The Ed solo version was one of my favorite pieces of music I've stumbled across in the past several months. It's very high on my Ipod playlist. I recommend you hunt it down, if you can find it.
Just a beautiful song. A beautiful sentiment. Not meant to be a Billboard chart-topper. Just the right song for the right moment.
for the least they could possibly do
I have heard it on channel 18 on Sirius several times over the past few days when I tune in randomly. It is billed as Pearl Jam's "new song."
I agree that the intent was probably just to give a little gift to the fans, not to make a hit (just like I think that was the intent behind Last Kiss - in addition to raising money for a charitible cause), and you make a good point about it being put on vinyl that half the world (very conservative estimate) can't even listen to.
My love for Pearl Jam and Eddie is deep, but I would not describe it as beautiful. "Sappy," yes. The lyrics are very basic and obvious - which give it good potential at being a pop success, and a misrepresentation of Pearl Jam's true music.
Thanks for the tip about the solo version. I'd like to hear it.
I'm as big a hard-ass about lyrics as you'll find ... I love the lyrics of this song. It's the only reason I like it, really. Simple? Yeah. So what? Simple can be beautiful.
I just relate to this song (and shouldn't we all?). As a 30-something who is just now coming to grips with his "old man-ness," every now and then I get overwhelmed by life (the house, the bills, the kid, the wife) and need to escape to ... someplace.
Ed has Santa Cruz. I've got my own little version of paradise.
I've had those exact moments Ed describes in the song, when you're with friends you've known since you were young ... and those same old feelings come back. You are young again. Had one of those moments just this weekend, in fact, when one of those guys got married. All together again, we were 17.
I'm not saying it's the best song in the Pearl Jam catalogue. It's just a good, simple song, and I think it's gotten far too much crap on this board, especially given that it's just a holiday single.
It really is a song that takes me to another time and place ... which is what great songs do. I'm sorry for those who don't get the same sort of feeling from it.

Which is totally cool if it was written hastily. But yeah, we're used to deeper lyrics.
It's "All The Way," written for Santa Cruz instead of Chicago.
I'm all for deep lyrics. It's why I got into this band in the first place. But not every song has to be a philosophical dissertation.
Sometimes, Picasso drew stick figures.

It was such a beautiful day, the sky was blue, the sun was shining, and there wasn’t a single cloud in the sky. Suddenly, We just found ourselves sitting there smiling- enjoying the day, our backyard, and each other-
“Santa Cruz” was the perfect soundtrack for that moment.
The song just perfectly evokes that feeling of peaceful contentment that comes with being somewhere –in a moment- which is so perfect, that you don’t ever want to leave or have it end. It’s a rare feeling these days, because we are always moving so fast and working so hard towards something that we may never reach- all the while getting older and in jepordy of losing that youthful energy and passion that we started with-
These moments seem so few and far between and it’s really tragic because ultimately I think it’s moments like this that make life worth living. It means so much more than having lots of money, a big house, and being successful at your job.
Anyways…” I got that feeling that I just can’t lose”
-I can totally relate to those words right now- I know exactly what Eddie is talking about.
It’s just such a great lyric and sentiment, and it perfectly describes that day, that moment, and that feeling.
“Santa Cruz” -if nothing else- will always be a great reminder of how I need to re-capture that feeling more often.
Great Song.
