I am sure there are some Philosophy majors on the board. What are some good beginning texts? What books should I be reading?

How about existential writings? Existentialist books?

I've never taken a philosophy course, but I would call myself a thinker by nature. I really enjoyed Thus Spoke Zarathustra by Nietzsche. I'd also recommend The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran, not really a philosophical text, more a short novel on life. I'd like to see some other responses too.

As really basic introduction but a very fun read Sophie's World by Jostein Gaarder, dialogues of plato, Jean-Paul Sartre, Ronald Dworkin, Bernard Williams, Peter Singer, and many many more and you're not going to believe me but if you like philosophy you'll love neuroscience... weird but true!

    Good luck!

i don't think it's odd at all....and most definitely true!
i loved, loved, loved my philosophy course, it was fantastic...and ohhhhhh so many years ago. the text we used was actually written by the prof who taught the course, and it was brilliant, and we had a companion text that was mostly made up of excerpts of writings by the great thinkers of philosophy. i do remember we read the brothers karamazof(sp?) by dostoevsky(sp?), and that was my first introduction to him as a writer and i fell in love.....just about read everything he wrote after that first taste.
    Stay with me...
    Let's just breathe...

I am myself like you somehow
