Hello

This coming september I'm going to be going away to college(Freshman year). So im trying to get a list of all of the stuff that i am going to need to bring.

I got all of the obvious stuff (Clothes, bedding, TV, game system, Laptop, etc.)

But I was wondering if any body knows anything that was really helpful that isnt obvious.
Just trying to start thinking about it.
Any suggestions or advice would be very helpful!
Thanks

Area rug. I remember the folks selling those as freshmen moved in made a killing. Think about an easily constructed wooden loft as well. More space. Milk crates function well as small bookshelves/storage.

I'd suggest an Apartment or Rental house instead.

HELL NO! the dorm is a MUST in the college experience... granted i had a decent roommate

to the OP, dont worry about forgetting stuff... i bought alot of shit throughout my freshman year... nothing essential or all that expensive... but things will come up... i cant think of anything specifically

OH... but duck tape is a must... for everything

  • The dorm is the BEST way to meet new people as a freshman! My roommate and I didn't get along but I still wouldn't trade the dorm experience for anything. If you live in an apartment, or in a single unit, you're much more likely to stay holed up, unless you join a few clubs I guess.

If your campus and the surrounding area is bikeable, bring one. Convenient and green!

Bring a fan, you may not be able to control your room's temp. Mini fridge, pins or blue tack for your posters (your housing site should have a list of what they allow), a lanyard for your room key, and plastic storage bins you can slide under your bed. You might also want to buy some plastic bed risers to increase that storage space. Non-perishable food (popcorn was big), stock up on medicine, band-aids, quarters for laundry.

Have you seen the rooms before? That will make a difference regarding what other people have suggested... in mine, there was no need for a rug, and they were already furnished so there was no place for a loft bed. If you can, take a housing tour so you don't go buy these things for nothing.

Oh, and keep your door open when you're in the room... this encourages your floormates to stop by and meet you.
I'll wait for an angel, but won't hold my breath
  • a fridge is very important. If the cafeteria food sucks, consider getting a skiddle. You can make eggs, burgers, grilled cheese, etc...
  • Yes, that reminds me, get one of those hot pot water boilers. You can make soup in them too.

Don't forget a nice little one-hitter, esp the kind that look like a cigarette... perfect for strolling around campus in nice weather eyeing the girls, and safer than smoking in your room. Also convenient when you're going to parties and don't want to be paying to get everyone else there high.

I got a double room. Bike is a great idea! I took a tour, the rooms are pretty small :( but they come with beds, chairs, dressers, desks, and amoir-things. keeping my door open is such a simple good idea that i wouldnt have thouht of. haha thanks for everything!

Skiddle is considered a "fire hazard" so its not allowed :(

    another "fire hazard" :(

Thanks for the tips! keep them coming! :D

    hehehehe...so?

i had a water boiler and a griddle....unless your ra or room mate is a tool, no one will care ;)

I agree about the hot plate/kettle idea, you just have to stash them when you're not using them. Your RAs/CAs/whatever you call them can only bust you if they're in plain sight. Also on my list that other folks haven't mentioned: those 3M Command hooks in various sizes, good earplugs, a toolkit, playing cards, a Frisbee or other group sport equipment (if you don't know how to throw a Frisbee, start practicing, it's largely the activity of choice).

I'm moving out this week from my freshman dorm and I would suggest lighting, yes all dorms have overhead lighting but its very bright. You might want to get an adjustable floor lamp, or you can do what I did and hang christmas lights around the whole room, just use removable 3m hooks so you don't damage the walls. It looks pretty cool, also if you have a big room a futon is a very good investment.

I had a great time when I lived in the dorm...which seems like a lifetime ago!
That said, there isn't enough money in the world to get me to do it again!

I lived in a highrise dorm for 2 years that didn't have windows that opened and the room I shared had just enough space for 2 desks and 2 single beds.

    Best time I ever had.

The key was/is to pass ;)

    Good Luck!!
