okay, sorry this might be a little long, but just need to rant.
So, yesterday I was pulling out of a parking spot at my gym, when i bumped into another car behind me and dented their front fender. I won't lie, my first thought was "I could just keep driving" but i knew my concience would make me feel like shit. so i left a note apologizing and my phone #. I talked to the lady this morning and she was sooo grateful that I even left anything. so i don't want to get my insurance involved because i'm still on my parent's family plan and not as covered as i thought and its most likely going to be all out of pocket. the estimates i've been getting have been around the $400-700 range.

so my question is...someone assure me i did the right thing!! this is gonna set me back soo much! i've been saving up to move and i live on a waitress salary, so someone assure me that my good karma is just overflowing right now! thanks guys...

Totally did the right thing. You are the person who leaves a note, and not the person who leaves the scene.

That is worth more than $700.00 IMO.

Good karma will come your way.

You'll easily get $4-700 back once your karma gets cashed in.

You did the right thing... Now that we've got that out of the way, I think 7 hundred sounds a little high for a dented fender. How new was her car? Did you crack the material, or can it be pounded out?

thanks for the encouraging words, guys.
as far as the fender, its pretty dented. I thought at first maybe someone could just pound it out but its' all scratched too. So it would be way easier just to replace the whole thing. yeah, the estimates have been in the higher $600-700 range, so I think that's the cost I'm going to end up eating.

but shit, when pearl jam finally does the west coast, if I don't score in the ticket lottery then something is messed up!!! jeez....
the funny part is, everyone I tell is all "aw, i wouldv'e just driven away!" and in the same breath they'll have a story about walking up to their car and seeing it dinged up with no note. soo....

Once I did the same thing and bailed. Karma got me because I turned and hit pole holding up a parking structure lightly with the tire of my car and my axle broke. Once that happened I instantly thought about the time I hit the car in the parking lot.

So I don't fuck with Karma anymore :)

I was a piss poor college student at the time, one person on campus saw me do it. Luckily I knew, and she said "You better get outta here!" So without thinking I bailed.

So basically, you did the right thing.

you should have gotten your insurance to pay for it. A dented bumper with no personal injury isn't going to change your premiums much more than maybe $50 for a year. If that. If anything.

See.. That's what insurance is for.

I mean. yeah.. you did the right karmic thing by leaving a note, although if you hadn't, her "uninsured motorist/hit and run" would have covered it.

But you can sleep better, I guess.

you did the right thing, no doubt about it. i accidentally hit the side of someone's car with my door in a parking lot once & it left a good ding/scrape. i left a note & they called me within 2 hours and were so shocked that i actually left a note.

You did what YOU would have wanted someone else to do. You did the right thing.

You may want to ask the person if they mind if you save up over the next 2 months to pay for it, being a waitress and all. They will probably agree. :)

Well, I didn't realize I was still under my parents' family plan, I thought I had my own policy. my mom and i looked up the paperwork and if i did start a claim for this, their rates would go through the roof for the next few years. so in the long run its going to be cheaper if i just pay for it.

yes, this was my first thought. but i had been getting so many negative/mocking responses from coworkers and aquiantances that "you should've just driven away! now look at what you have to deal with!" it was starting to get to me. I guess i just needed some assurance that i wasn't a rube.

If her rates would go through the roof for a simple dented bumper, you need a new insurance company.

I think when insurance has a payout, they'll charge you more than that amount over time. Probably better to pay it yourself. Or maybe if you ask the person if THEY will pay for it, then you'll pay then $100 each month for 10 months, so they'll earn $300 out of it, and it will be more gradual on your wallet!

You did the right thing. I'm not gonna lie to you and say that something good will happen to you because of karma because that is unforeseen. Something good could happen to you tomorrow or years from now or never at all. It's really all a toss up in my opinion. Don't get me wrong I would like to believe that karma it's just hard sometimes. I respect what you did (for all that's worth. I mean I'm just another faceless dweller of the internet).

Since we're on the topic of karma, I always find it funny that karma is used in the wrong context. In true eastern philosophy, the term 'karma' literally means 'action' and you develop karmic debt by taking action based on preconceived thought or intent. So there really is no good or bad karma, karma just is, if you put too much thought into your actions. It's like the counter force to just going with the flow. Now, your first thought was to leave a note, so I'd say you are a good person and that you didn't develop any karmic debt. :)
