I'm all in favor of this. I loved tek but he's getting old and coming towards the end of his career. Martinez would be a great fit

F the Redsox, between them and the Yankees they use every other team in the majors as a minor league farm team.
GROW SOME OF YOUR OWN DAMN TALENT!

1. Jacoby Ellsbury
2. Dustin Pedroia
3. Kevin Youkilis
4. Jonathan Papelbon
5. Justin Masterson
6. Clay Buchholz
7. Daniel Bard.

If the sox grow so much talent then call up a catcher instead of raping all the other small market teams! Listen I know how baseball works and the Indian's management is a bunch of tight wads and IS probably shopping Victor but I'm just saying my peace...It pisses me off as a baseball fan here. There needs to be a salary cap.
If you get Victor, enjoy him, he's been a favorite of mine for some time( just like C.C. Sabbitha, before he left town)
F'n small market city!
I totally agree with this, and I'm a Yankee fan. I hate that 26 teams in the league serve as a farm system to the Yankees, Red Sox, Mets, and occassionally the Cubs or dodgers. Nowadays, when a player breaks out, everyone wonders where he will go. Like Greinke. He'll have a few good years with the Royals, and then sign with one of the big 3. It's not entirely the fault of big market teams though. Small market teams have to occassionally pay their players

Gladly!
Coco helped the Sox get to the '07 title ... but, it's funny ot look back on that deal when everyone though Andy Marte was the gem, when indeed, it was Shoppach.

The Sox have only the 6th highest payroll in baseball this year. So don't lump them in the with the Yankees.

Most of their moves are not big free agent signings - that's the popular misconception about them.
Their biggest free agent signings the last decade:
2009: Smoltz off an injury
2008: an over the hill Sean Casey
2007: oft injured J.D. Drew and Julio Lugo who no one considers a star (Dice K was technically not a free agent - he was purchased from Japan and Japanese pitchers are no sure thing - case in point the Yankees paying a ton for Kei Igawa that same year)
2006: Julian Tavarez
2005: David Wells, Matt Clement and Edgar Renteria - Wells was over the hill and Renteria had some nice season but none of the three are stars
2004: Keith Foulke - who was one of the best closers that year but had made only one all star team when he signed as a free agent (Schilling was traded for that offseason)
2003: David Ortiz - who was released by the Twins and not a great slugger as of yet - well was a great slugger Kevin Millar, Ramiro Mendoza and Mike Timlin were the other notable signings that offseason
2002: Carlos Baerga and a 42 year old Rickey Henderson
2001: Manny Ramirez
So you have to go back to before Theo took over as gm and back 9 seasons since the Red Sox signed a major free agent.

Wait a minute ...
The Sox put up $51M for the rights just to sign Matsuzaka ... money they would get back if he didn't sign with the Sox, but, since he did sign, the Sox paid that money to the Seibu Lions.
The contract he signed was 6 years at $52M
That's over $100M invested over 6 years. Semantics aside, I'd call this a major free agent signing.
That said, the Sox have been pretty frugal when compared to their heated rivals to the south ....
Opening day total payroll:
Red Sox:
2009: $121,745,999
2008: $133,390,035
2007: $143,026,214
2006: $120,099,824
2005: $123,505,125
2004: $127,298,500
2003: $ 99,946,500
2002: $108,366,060
2001: $110,035,883
Yankees:
2009: $201,449,189
2008: $209,081,577
2007: $189,639,045
2006: $194,663,079
2005: $208,306,817
2004: $184,193,950
2003: $152,749,814
2002: $125,928,583
