Where in Philly should I stay? We want to be in the "main" area I guess but most importantly somewhat close to the famous cheesesteak places.

Stay downtown. Basically somewhere within a few blocks of Market St, between 2nd and 18th. The subway will take you right to the door of the Tower for $2.

They're not the best steaks, but Pat's and Geno's are right beside each other (9th & Passyunk) and provide a great experience.

Stay away from Pat’s and Geno’s, they suck. I say Jim’s on South Street is your best bet for a cheesesteak.

There are a ton of hotels downtown, I was walking around last week and couldn’t get over the number of hotels in this city. Anyway, I don’t know your price range, so just do a google search and you’ll be on your way.

    Enjoy the show(s). I can’t wait.
Don't come closer or I'll have to go
  • Thanks!!!

Looking forward to it. Just about 3 weeks!

Looks like we staying at radison on 17th , rittenhouse area?? That a good area to stay? Seems close to market.

Also stupid question........I have to imagine there is a bad time to go to Pats/Geno's?? Whats the wait like?
i was told there are no hotels really in the pats/genos area and basically you need to cab or subway there???

I concur with the other posts. Neither place is worth it, especially considering where you'll be staying. Go to South St. and have one there.

If you're staying in the Rittenhouse area, you could always go to Tony Luke's Jr.

It's not as good as the original but it's close by. You're also real close to Black Sheep which is where the proposed after concert drink up is supposed to be at.

Cheers! I'm at the Crowne (HotWire baby!) -- but yeah, I had Jim's on my itinerary cause it's open til 3am that night! Who's up for the journey after the Black Sheep?

Also -- just figured out that timing -- I see 6.5 miles from Independence Hall to the The Tower Theater, 18 minutes or so. But then, it's smack in the middle of Friday afternoon get-outta-town rush hour traffic? Pretty sure I can figure out the subway, but in case I freak and take a taxi, watcha think? 40-50 mins?

Nah, half hour tops. Just ride Walnut out to 61st, take a right till you get to Market, Hang a left on Market and the venue is there in about 5 minutes on your left. It's really easy to get too. Once you get past 20th Street on Walnut it opens up.

Couldn't agree more...best sandwich in the city is Tony Luke's hot pork. But if you just want a cheesesteak, go to Jim's

Black Sheep is a quick walk to 15th and Market. You can get the subway there and get to the Tower in about 20 minutes for $2. Quicker and way cheaper than a cab.

  • I'm also traveling out to philly for these shows. I haven't booked a hotel yet, but hoping to get a great deal from priceline or one of those websites today. Where's everyone drinking before? Are there good bars over near the venue or should i drink downtown and then take the train over?

I wouldn't go late night on a Friday or Saturday after the bars close. (I rarely go there myself because there are so many better options unless tourists are in town.) But in the afternoon you should be fine.

Neither Jim's nor Pat's/Geno's is particularly close to Rittenhouse/Market St. You could take the subway from Rittenhouse to 2nd and Market, however, and walk about 15 minutes to Jim's.

That's on South Street, which is pretty cool to see in and of itself. Try to avoid the 12-1pm time, however, as there could be a 15-minute or so line.

    Enjoy!

A little good news/bad news for people coming from out-of-town or just hanging out not far from Upper Darby on Friday ...

WXPN's Free At Noon concert (really free and really at noon) will feature The Meat Puppets ... for anyone who might want to get an early start at a cool venue in University City with a nice bar staff and see a free show at the same time.

    Details on reservations here: http://www.publicradiomail.org/wxpn/eve ... etails.tcl

The sort-of bad news is that there will be a very increased police presence in the South Street and 69th Street (Upper Darby/Tower) area due to swarming teens. More here: http://tinyurl.com/nq5xcq

I don't advise on taking the EL( subway) as you'll be riding it back to center city at midnight. It's not the safest way if traveling in a small group. Upper Darby used to be a great area. The Tower is an awesome place to see a show. I'll be at the Thursday show. It can't get here soon enough. Hopefully the tickets I got through the Ten club are close. Either way, there isn't a bad seat in the house.

I respectfully disagree with you there. At least 100 fans will walk out of the show and onto the subway with you, and you can sit/stand by them on the subway all the way to the center city stops, which are safe. I'd feel 100% comfortable with my wife doing that by herself after a Tower show.

Obviously nothing is safer than being in your own car, but that means parking it in Center City, parking it at the Tower, and driving to (in rush hour) and from the show...

I'm with Ryan on this. You're still safer riding the El than dealing with anything having to do with the Susquehanna center in Camden.

  • Had a great weekend in Philly. Never really spent time there before and didnt realize how nice it is.
The EV show was great! Porch was just killer! Best i've seen. Loved the new song too. Tower was ver cool. Took the subway. We went to the Black Sheep after the show was anyone there? DIdnt see one person who looked like they were coming from EV.

Was awesome to see the rocky statue and run the stairs. We went for Jims steaks and Tony Lukes. Liked Jims better but wasnt blown away by either. Next time Pats and Genos. Last event was going to Phillies/Sox saturday night. I knew eddie would be there!! Everyone I was with is a big sox fan so that was cool. Nice stadium! The entire sports complex are is sweet. Where was the Vet?? & if the 76ers and Flyers play at the new wachovia what is the spectrum used for if anything???

The Vet was right next to where Citizens Bank Park is. It is now a parking lot. (they paved paradise - haha).

Up until this year, the Spectrum was used for our minor league hockey team, the Phantoms, as well as an indoor soccer team, the Kixx, and our lacrosse team, the Wings. Besides that, it is also used for concerts, circus, etc. Its currently scheduled to be torn down on new year's eve this year to make way for an entertainment complex with shops, restaurants, and perhaps casinos.
