Rotten office fridge cleanup sends 7 to hospital

The Associated Press

SAN JOSE, Calif. - An office worker cleaning a fridge full of rotten food created a smell so noxious that it sent seven co-workers to the hospital and made many others ill.

Firefighters had to evacuate the AT&T building in downtown San Jose on Tuesday after the fumes led someone to call 911. A hazmat team was called in.

What crews found was an unplugged refrigerator crammed with moldy food.

Authorities say an enterprising office worker had decided to clean it out, placing the food in a conference room while using two cleaning chemicals to scrub down the mess.

The mixture of old lunches and disinfectant caused 28 people to need treatment for vomiting and nausea.

Authorities say the worker who cleaned the fridge didn't need treatment , she can't smell because of allergies.

I worked at a steam plant in Cambridge MA in 2007 and they had a fully operating fridge in the 2nd floor of the warehouse where the guys could keep their lunches. Fast forward to early this year. I had to go back there for 2 week back in February and the same fridge was there. Not thinking that anything had changed (crews had been out of there for about a year) I went to the fridge thinking it was still plugged in. I almost died when the smell hit me. I didn't keep it open long enough to see what was inside, but I almost puked. The really bad part is I didn't tell anyone in the plant about it cause it wasn't their's it was the construction crews from the previous year. Some sorry son of a bitch will make the same mistake I made only you may also read about it in the news as well by then.
