Cymbals are so important, I'm starting a thread just for them. :D

What do you have, and WHY?

I've got:

Paiste 2002 14" Heavy Hi Hats
Paiste Signature Full Crash 16" 18" 19"
Paiste Signature Splash 8"
Paiste Signature Thin China 16"
Zildjian (old - no printing) ride.

I have the Signature Full Crashes because they cut thru so cleanly, and when played at very low volumes they have a very easy break and a sweet wash. The Signature thin china also has a very easy break, and it's not too gong-ey. I've had a Paiste 2002 china, and it was really way too gong-ey. The Paiste 2002 hi hat I've been thinking of replacing, but it has a good chick sound, and sturdy for heavy playing.

so... what have you got? ...and why? :D
ADD 5,200 to the post count you see, thank you. :)

    Paiste

    14' 2002 Sound Edge hats
    16' Alpha crash (early 90's)
17' 2002 crash (cracked about halfway around the lathing, shitty spiral effect) Still use it tho haha
    18 2002 Wild crash
    20' Alpha ride (early 90's)
    10' Alpha Metal Splash

would get sigs if I had the money. I do want a Zildjian K dark medium ride to replace my Alpha ride. I want a rock/jazz ride and the Paiste ones are just WAY too expensive.

14" Sabian AAX - X-celerator hats (after playing for 2 hours with different hats, these I liked best and wanted the wavy bottom)
8" Sabian b8p splash (for "Dave A" style playing ha
14" Paiste PST5 crash (Sounded good and was cheap)
18" Paiste Dimensions crash - ( got a killer deal and sounded great...pretty loud though may get something more subtle someday)
19" Paiste Dimensions crash (same as above)
22" Paiste 2002 power ride - Found it for $75 and love it. Cuts through everything when I need it to
18" Wuhan china - cheap trashy and found a good one
12" Wuhan china - same as above

    for friends and kids:
    14" Sabian B8 hats
    20" Sabian B8 ride
    16" Sabian b8 crash
    16" Zildjian crash

My Paiste Signature Thin China is sweet for what it's worth. Before that I had a Zildjian which sounded very good too but it broke. BTW - if you have extra cracked cymbals lying around, people WILL buy them. I listed like 4 of them on craigslist here in VA, and in NY areas and sold them in both places. Got between $10 and $30 a piece for them, so it added up nicely. :)

One day I want to take a beat-up old Wuhan and drill like 40 holes in it and add nuts and bolts all over the place, just to see the scary sound it'll make. :)

I gave away my last batch of cracked cymbals (all zildjians) to someone who wanted them to practice with. That Paiste sig thin china is one I have been eyeing. My little 12" wuhan china is has a nice little trashy accent I like to use in almost flam like fashion with the 18" china

Well, ive played sabian...not so much the case with paiste... and Zildjian customs and A's just seem to be worth the expense.
they sound more full and have greater dynamics when hit hard or light.
I find they just tend to add more volume and thickness to a band.

how much dough is that paiste sig china? I typically dont like Paiste chinas. Zildjians make the best chinas. I have a Paiste PST5 china that sounds more like a tinny gong then a china, complete garbage I dont even use it anymore.

I did something similar with no name hi hats, i drilled 4 holes into them and bent them up around the bell similar to a china. Sounded like trash, not in a good way though haha.

    14" Zildjian A New Beat Hi-Hats
18" Zildjian K Custom Dark Crash
18" Zildjian K Custom Hyrbid Crash
21" Sabian HH Vintage Ride (great as a crash as well)
18" Sabian AAX Stage Crash (cracked but in use)
    16" Zildjian A China Low

Plus some other lower level cymbals (ZBT, B8 Pro, etc) that I dont use at all anymore.

As for the "why?", all of my cymbals are versatile. The new beats are very classic sounding and cover all types of music. The crashes are quite different, but complement each other nicely. My ride, which I'm in love with, is the perfect combination between wash and ping for my tastes. Depending on how it's hit, I get so many different sounds. My china doesn't get used very much...

Been a while since I got the china. Just realized it's a 16". I probably bought it for between $125 - $185 on ebay. Whatever I paid, totally worth it! Easy break on the sound, with a lot of power. Good break on light playing too.

Paiste's signature series are AMAZING. Their lower end stuff is very gong-ey and I wouldnt touch it except their alpha hi hats. I wouldn't judge the signature china by the PST5 china. Major difference. Since the last china I had was a zildjian, I would easily say the paiste signature china is on par with my last zildjian china - except my paiste has not cracked.

may be bad luck, but every cymbal that I have ever broken has been a Ziljdian. I have had the same Paiste and Sabian for years.
I am going to sell a snare...maybe just trade it toward the Paiste Sig China

I've cracked Sabians which I started on, Zildjians which I brought in a few maybe 12 years ago and also one of my used Paiste signatures. I believe, except for light-drummers or heavy-cymbals, that all cymbals crack. There's no way to abuse a piece of metal that long and not have it crack. The thinner they are, the easier it happens.

I'd say just buy cymbals you like, and try to get a deal with them used - preferably new-used, like owned for a few months. My newest 19" Paiste Signature Crash was that - and was a sweet deal.

...the last time I inspected my 16" Paiste Sig China there were no cracks. I'm not too light on it either, but I don't hit it as frequently either. Btw - when I worked for Metallica when we did the SNL with "fuel", Lars played a cracked ride... or big crash. I forget which it was. It happens to all of us.

woohoo! Got 2 new Paiste Signature Reflector Heavy Full crashes today!

these are my new 16" and 19"
    p1010133l.jpg

I also recently got an 18". The set of 3 are to replace my cracked Paiste Signature Reflector Full Crashes. Hoping that the "heavy" will keep these from cracking on me. Luckily, they sound just as good as the regular Sigs, though the 16" heavy reflector is a little higher in pitch than the cracked 16" full I had.

Can't wait to get these home, in t-minus 19 minutes.

Man oh man. I just got a 19" Paiste Signature Dark Energy crash in the mail today. oh my dear god, it sounds wonderful... and that's just by tapping it with a sharpie, and tapping it with the wooden handle of a hammer (I'm at work). I can't wait to try it out on my kit, but it's already giving me chills. I keep walking over to it with my finger just to tap it... the perfect "wash", and perfect sustain and perfect pitch is amazing.
