I don't think so at all in that it will take years to bring the war in Afghanistan under any control. Innocent civilians are being killed and if Obama continues to increase the troops to this vast country the death toll on both sides will continue to rise.

Conservative Historian Andrew Bacevich Warns Against Obama’s Escalation of War in Afghanistan and Intensifying Use of Air Power in Region
Less than a week after US air strikes killed over a hundred Afghan civilians, President Obama’s top security adviser, General James Jones, said Sunday that the US will continue its strikes in Afghanistan, despite sharp criticism about rising civilian casualties from Afghan President Hamid Karzai. We speak to Boston University professor and retired military colonel Andrew Bacevich about why Obama’s plans in Afghanistan and Pakistan are counterproductive.

A lot of folks have lost everything, including their lives, believing that they can bring Afghanistan to heel.....I'm still amazed at what happened there in 2001.

The difference is the reason why we are there.

I would say... the biggest difference is... one is a 'Just Cause', while the other is a 'Just Cuz'.

    War is war.

How many wars are we going to get into before we realize the motives are never what they claim?

    war on drugs
    war on communism
    war to liberate
    war to bring democracy
    war on terrorism.

always a war on something. and the results are always similar, whatever the pretext.

Its self evident that there is NOT any difference. W presided over two wars, and Obama is doing the same thing. He will not and does not support withdrawal, and even what he does propose, taking troops from Iraq and moving them to Afghanistan, is just as ludicrous.

The war on terrorism is a silly and insane battle. You cant end terrorism with the barrel of a gun. You just cant. Obviously W felt we could, and so does obama. Its sad really.

To the families of those deployed overseas, soldiers who have PTSD and have come back and gone back, and come back, and gone back, I dont think there is any difference at all.

A six year old kid whose parents or parent is fighting in iraq doesnt give a damn if its obama or W, or Afghanistan or Iraq. They want their parent home, safe and sound, where they should be.

When Barack Obama was running for president, asked in the debates who would MLK endorse, who would Dr. King endorse, he said, “None of us.”

Obama's totally right and I agree with you. This is where he has failed to me so far concerning these wars. It appears he has not gotten out of the mindset of fighting wars to solve the issues in the Middle East. The same mistake Bush made in Iraq, we shall see what Obama will do as far as change until then civilians and troops will continue to die before they ALL come home.
