"I heard that Eddie was having trouble writing lyrics for this one and basically built up from the initials of his hero; Pete Townsende. Taking P and T and then building a whole song around the name Present Tense. This might not be true, I can't remember where i heard it, but if it is it speaks volumes about Eddies talent as a lyricist that he could come up with such an insightful song based on something so random."

Can anyone confirm/dismiss this?

He says during a show (don't ask me which one) that Present Tense has the same initials as Pete Townshend, which I thought was a silly comment (and there were crickets chirping in the crowd), but if it has something to do with the writing of the song, that makes much more sense, though I can't help but wonder if this is just a misinterpretation of Ed's comment.

I tend to fall on the side of the "misinterpretation of Ed's comment" thing. Ed has a lot of intros to songs that make you scratch your head. Must be the wine ;)

  • I honestly don't think there is any connection. It makes sense, and it looks good on paper, but if you really think about it it's kind of illogical.

Present Tense is about shunning away from your past. It's about perseverance. It's about living your life in the present tense.

Now Peter might have helped convey that idea to Eddie, because it is very clear that he helped keep the band together in the earl 90's, but I think the "PT" initials is just irony at it's finest.

I honestly don't think Ed can get a sentence out without saying "uh" at least 3 times. LOL.
