Plea to 4 Digit or Less Fan Club Members: Tell Us a Story

Please come out of hiding and tell us how you came to love PJ from the very start. What got you first interested? What compelled you to join the club all those years ago? Why did you keep renewing your membership year after year? With all the changes that have taken place in the club, with the band and in their music; was it hard to keep renewing?

Did you follow Mother Love Bone? See them live? Did you see Mookie Baylock open for Alice In Chains? Or maybe Pearl Jam open for the Red Hot Chili Peppers? Did you buy TEN when it was released and join right away?

Please take a moment a share a little with us.

Bashing not allowed  maybe that’s why these guys rarely post around here. These fans need to be celebrated for jump starting the band and helping to keep them relevant all these years.

I would be interested to see how many are still around, that is pretty amazing almost 20 years of being in a fan club. Hopefully 1 or 2 come out and answer your question.

Well...I guess this would be the perfect opportunity for me to " vent " a long standing frustration regarding the loss of my " 4 digit or less " fan club number ... I have been a die hard follower of the band members since pre Pearl Jam days and was lucky enough to have seen everyone with the exception of Mike pre PJ. I was a member of the fan club from the start, I'm a collector of all items PJ, play the music, listen to it everyday...even have a PJ tattoo but...In the mid 90's I encountered financial hardships and could not afford to maintain my Ten Club membership so I lost my # :( by the time I was able to re enlist I ended up with a 6 digit member # and no amount of pleading via letter writting ( yup pre internet ) got my old # back. I have not had good fan club tickets ever since ...it is pure torture not being able to secure good seats to shows and constantly being trapped in a lower balcony seat 30 rows behind people that might not have been born when I was already deeply in love with the music. I have never missed a PJ tour and on many occassions I have coughed up disgusting amounts of money to upgrade my seats " on site " but I have never - never been able to even get within the first 30 rows :( No BS...what..like 17 years and never once have I scored a seat up front !? I've attended the entire west coast slide on multiple occasions but every time from the " cheap seats " On any occasion in which I have been able to buy better tickets on site I have given my seats away for free to folks that were unable to secure tickets because I understand the torture of missing a show or having less than desirable seats. The saga continues...just as frustrating was missing out on pre sale tickets to every EV solo west coast show and seeing those tickets for sale on every figgin web site you can imagine ! I even got skunked on EV tickets for the San Diego show in my home town on my birthday ! shed a tear for me it was sad...knowing that show was going on on my B Day and shut out...but seriously I felt that whole pre sale process was so poorly handled that I refused to shell out the insane amount of money these jerks were re selling the seats for and missed the whole EV tour. Dear Santa, good seats to a PJ show just once...O.k...done venting.

No problem with your post. Just didn’t want to start a trend. Looking for super early experiences and wanted to show some appreciation to those members.

What got you to Roseland? That Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins (sometimes Nirvana) and Red Hot Chili Peppers tour in ’91 in hindsight was pretty dang special.

Wow, didn’t expect something like that right off. Thank you for taking the time to share. It hurts to hear about your hard times and the subsequent loss of your early membership number after supporting the bands early endeavors. If it ever works out, that we plan on attending the same show, you can use my extra. At least that’ll get you a little closer. You deserve it.

So I have to ask, did you see Bad Radio in San Diego?

Where to start. I, like JC63117, was a member early... for me in '93 (i think?). I've lapsed 2x since. No financial hardships here, I'm just stupid, and I own that stupidity. I think it was only 15 bux until about 2004/5 or so right? Anyway, my number now is 214,xxx (yeah, suck), and I said on a different thread that I will try to dig up my old number. easier said than done with a hundred moves since 93!).

What got me into the band? Well, I'd like to say "duh", but that doesn't cut it. I was in HS in 89-93, grunge was hot. I'm a drummer and I pretty much exclusively listened to Rush up to that point. My brother met the band in 92 at a convention in Texas (he was the events/music/talent coordinator for his college and went to these things all the time... I have a signed Epic Records CD from that meeting... that Epic sampler has 3rd Bass and Spin Doctors on it, if I recall). Anyway, I listened to that CD, fell IN LOVE with PJ instantly. It spoke to me in a way not much else has. there's TONS of better "musicians" out there (no, I'm not saying they're bad musicians, just that there's always better... another side story... the drummer for Mastodon is an acquaintance of mine, and he once told me when I made a critical comment about a drummer I thought sucked but the band was successful... "but it works for them". I felt dumb... but that's the point about pearl jam, for me... "it just works for them", they mesh so well together... again, they're very good musicians/artists). So I was an angst ridden teen, with all the life problems that everyone thinks they're the only ones that have it. If PJ didn't speak to me at that time, no one could have. Maybe they didn't save my life, but they saved me from me.

Anywho, I listened to RHCP and my bro saw PJ open at lolla. My bro was really influential in getting me into them as you can tell. I recently flew him and his family over to Europe to go to Vienna 2006 with me. (I lived in Germany for a while). That was way cool. We had 10c tix and the floor was GA with 10c getting in early. We had an awesome spot on the floor, along the center 'spine', about 10 'rows' of people back. Because we were on the spine, we had something to hold on to, and didn't get pushed around at all... moved back 1 foot the whole night as I marked the spine just to see!).

I grew up and went to college in Rochester, NY. My 2 best friends and I had something called PJ time. When TEN was released, it was the only tape (yeah, tape) in our cars. We'd pick each other up and go places... My house to our favorite place to eat took us "Alive" to get there. It was "Black" to get from my house to Tim's place. Everywhere we went, we knew how long it took, by how far we'd get thru 10. Crazy. In 1993, I was approx the 20th person in Roc to get Vs. (the original, untitled eco pack) as I went to the House of Guitars for the CD release party. We stayed up ALL night and put that fucker on repeat. Ahhh, to be in college. Go, Dissident and RVM are still on my all time fav list.

What keeps me listening? They're the same band, but they're not. I like that the CD's don't all sound like Ten. That would suck.

Maybe some (most) would say I'm not a "fanatic". I like the 'band' and the music they put out. I don't know the names of Eddie's kids, or what the member's b-days are... I have wikipedia for that should I need to know it. I only have a very small handful of collectible items (including 3 of the t-shirts they just re-released, stickman, choices, black... all have been worn at least once a year since back then... still in "relatively" good shape). Maybe I'm not the best guy to ask PJ trivia questions too, but doesn't mean I don't love the band. I used to have "every lyric to every song" memorized... but I have a 6 yr old and a 3 yr old now... I can sing you some "Go, Diego, Go" songs if you'd like. Those words I know by heart. PJ is great, but my kids are better. PJ wouldn't stand a chance.

Since it's not really a money thing, I kinda wish those of us that lapsed could just pay up for the years missed. I'd even pay a make-up fee or something. The seniority thing is valuable, and while I know how it would seem unfair (especially since I don't have a good reason for lapsing other than "i got busy with life"). Would be cool, but I own my f-ups and (no offense here) I didn't write in to ask for special treatment.

Well, I hope that story is reasonable for you. Love 'em tons. I think it's kick ass that they are still rocking so hard. The don't jump around nearly as much, but I don't blame em for that (neither do I). I've seen them 9 times, Toronto on my b-day this year will be 10. gonna see Eddie in Albany 2x in June.... PJ has been non-stop on my mp3 player for the last month easy. It's like a Renaissance. I'm 17-18 all over again.

If you have any mailings from the 10c your member number is printed by your address.

Or you could probably shoot the club an email and request it.

Take your join date (eg: 10241996) and divide it by 3 and times it by the day you were born (eg: if born on a Wednesday, times it by 4 for the fourth day of the week). Move the decimel to the left three spaces, and that'll give you a number in no way resembling your member number. ...but you wanna try it now, don't ya?

I have a five-digit number but figured I'd share anyway. For me....it was the "Jeremy" song and video, which I randomly saw late one night on MTV. It blew my mind and instantly rendered the rest of my CD collection irrelevant.

My love for their music went up another notch with "Vs" at which point I craved any info I could get my hands on, hence me joining the fanclub.

I'm actually surprised I never forgot to re-new, but luckily I'm kind of anal about bills and deadlines. :D

another side story... the drummer for Mastodon is an acquaintance of mine, and he once told me when I made a critical comment about a drummer I thought sucked but the band was successful... "but it works for them".

I'm so off-topic here, but Mastodon's new record is AMAZING. Please tell your friend that he's got a HUGE fan base here in Chicago :)

How could you run into financial trouble to not be able to pay for membership. Wasn't it like $5 a year back then?

Unless, of course, you were homeless and living on the street... then i suppose you really couldn't afford it.

will do, when/if he's off the road. those guys are relentless. And I agree, new CD rox. Brann's an amazing drummer and a pretty damn fine person as well. Turns out PJ are fans of Mastodon as well.

$20, $5 or $0.50, when you have no money, you have no money. I applaud him for not putting a fan club membership above his financial needs. He's got better discipline than I.

I feel your pain. I joined in 92 and have the newsletters to prove it. I let mine lapse because back in those days the 10 club was really disorganized. I sent my five bucks, they lost it, I got annoyed with them and decided not to renew. Something I have regretted ever since but who knew? I have also begged them for my old number back but you can guess how well that went. I rejoined in the late 90's and now have a 193XXX number. I tend to be on Mike side in a 100 level section, which is pretty good but a collection of picks and tambourines I do not have (or any of either). Either that or really far back on the floor which as a relatively short person sucks. I have never won the lottery though Ive been to dozens of shows since they started it. Sorry to hear your story but I'm at least glad I'm not the only one.

There was no basis for upholding your seniority until they started doing reserved seating.

Apologies for speaking on this guy's behalf, but I would imagine that if tickets weren't based on seniority till 00', then what was the point of being in a fanclub and paying any annual dues if you couldn't afford to go to any shows?

I’m not sure how to online, maybe someone else can help with that route.

I don't care what anyone says....thats some funny shit!!!!

Also I am not a 4 digit person but I am a 5 digit person signed up in april of 94

Nevermind asking if anyone is a 4-digit or less 10C member. Does anyone here even KNOW anyone - or know of anyone - who is a 4-digit or less member? I think 5 digits is the lowest I've heard of. I'd bet there are a lot of stories like the ones here about people who let their memberships lapse, especially if seniority wasn't an issue back then.
