    I'm going to guess 403(b)... the non-profit equivalent of a 401(k).

I know it's PJ and all, but sounds like a poor use of retirement money and early withdrawal penalties to me... espescially when the market has nowhere to go but up... but that's just the fiscally responsible grown up talking. :)

I'll be using part of the down payment I've been saving for a new house down here in southern Florida. It's a good thing the house prices have dropped about $150,000-$200,000 (unfortunately about what my 407 plan lost) & the mortgage rates are bellow 5%. Now I need to find someone to lend me the money ;). BTW I've been lucky enough to live twice. It's gooood to be ALIVE!
So, What you Giving ?........ (Thanks Speedy, Alesek, & Arq+friends)
    What You Giving

I suggest you step out on your Porch.

Yah, I thought you'd be penalized for any withdrawal, no matter what size, if you're under age, except for down payment on a first time home or college tuition or something along those lines.

And you have to pay it back.

If it's worth it, it's worth it. *shrugs*

Nice, I'm using my bowling money for my Chicago trip. I bowl in a league on Monday nights and we finished our season yesterday and got paid out our winnings for coming in 4th place in a 16 team league.

I'm using money earned by participating in corporate focus groups. I rationalize this by telling the moderators the opposite of my true opinions.

Nice. I used to love sweeper nights. When I bowled I had a high handicap ;) and always seemed to kick butt on sweeper night! :)

Jose---hope it works out to take out of the 403(b).

You can avoid the penalty if you take out a loan against your balance instead of taking a withdrawal.

I'm using my vacation fund from work to cover my entire trip, including tickets. I get paid $1 per hour I work into this fund, so $40 per week etc. and I am happy to say I have been saving since last summer so my wife and I's flight, hotel, rental car, tickets and expenses are covered. Man that feels good to say.

based on your thread title, I assume you are looking for advice. I usually advise clients that retirement money IRA/401k should be considered nonexistent. the $1000 you take out now for a tour may end up costing you $5-7k over the next 30 years.

Just take a loan from the balance and pay it back it will cost you nothing. You will be paying the interest to yourself.

yes, this is an option, but I assume that if he is taking money out of his retirement he does not think he will be able to pay back a loan. if you anticipate being able to pay it back, a loan is a much better option.

look at his second post. He is taking a LOAN therefore he will not have to pay the 10%, His post indicates that it will be paid back out of his paychecks. Prob not the most prudent thing to use the money for but cant say i blame him one bit. Enjoy the shows!
