I'm flying into Amsterdam picking up supplies and staying a couple of days, taking the train to Rotterdam-staying all night in Rotterdam and flying to Berlin or possibly taking a night train from Rotterdam to Berlin.(Still checking on the schedule for that)?? From Berlin I am taking a day in Dublin so I will be flying from Dublin to Manchester and then catching a car ride from Manchester to London and then flying home from London.

    All subject to change.

Not crazy rich, just unemployed and don't know when else in my life I can just take off like this-it's worth the money, especially if you have nothing else to spend it on.

Do you have a general idea how much that is going to cost. I really want to come to Europe, but budget is tough.

I know you can get flights from Rotterdam to Berlin through transavia for around £70/$100 if that's any help.

Well, I don't know how old you are but if you're under 25 and a student, you can stay in some pretty nice hostels for easily under $50 a night. as for transportation my flight there and back is costing me $700, but I'm booking now and dug really hard for a good flight. The train is really cheap if you book as soon as the ticket goes on sale so plan for $50 for each journey, just to have enough but don't wait until last minute to book anything or it will cost a fortune. The flight from Rotterdam to Berlin is $150. You can catch a coach from Manchester to London for as cheap as a couple of bucks but again you have to book now, there is a link for that on another thread. Good luck.

    :?
what difference does any of that make?
do you seriously go to another country ONLY to see pearl jam? that's IT? not to experience the people and culture of said country? pearl jam shows abroad are a GREAt way to go off and travel, meet fellow fans you'd not otherwise, and get to experience different lifestyles, people, places, foods, etc. isn't that the whole POINT of travel?

i highly doubt anyone simply does so JUST to see pearl jam. pearl jam is just a good excuse, and an excellent way to plan your intinerary. ;) EVERY year i've traveled to see pearl jam, i ALSO caught shows at home.

    just sayin'.

and that said, i'm not coming over for the august gigs. :)

Well when i went to usa to see them as bizzare as it seems, i thought pearl jam first rather than New York, i wasn't going there for a holiday. New York is all over the internet, tv etc so i think the whole image of it has been destroyed as i've seen it so many times. Yeah it was cool, but not as cool as it would have been if i'd never seen it. Also have been to america quite a few times before hand anyway so i know what its like. Exploring Boston was nice though. But the exploring and culture stuff was 2nd to seeing Pearl Jam and fans meet ups honestly. Also i travelled there as i didn't have a clue when PJ would next tour europe, so when they do i take full advantage.

No travelling would have taken place if it wasn't for Pearl Jam, so they are the main attraction.

Hmm and just from the general feel from here people don't have the best economic situation and to come here for 4 shows, 2 of which are in the same country which is more expensive than usa and then loads of annoying travelling is just is a lot of effort.

Dont even know if thats what i really think but oh well.

    interesting.
i guess the perspective would be quite different as a european coming to the states than an american going to europe. we KNOW we will have shows, and often...it's just a question of WHERE in the states that is always the BIG question. however, yes...pearl jam may BE the impetus, initially, to travel to europe or elsewhere, but as far as i've known of people, such as myself, who have traveled to the states and seen pj elsewhere it is not ALONE the reason for it.....b/c indeed, we get plenty of shows to not warrant flying 7-9+ hours and spending a shit ton of $$$ simply to see pearl jam. given that i believe the OP is also a fellow NYer, i doubt he/she is doing it soley for pj.....just as i said....good excuse: pearl jam + international travel = JOY.

btw - you are the very first perosn i have even met/spoken with who has ever described visiting NYC in such a way. :P i know plenty of people who have come here and didn't care for it much...fair enough.....but your experience reads as quite 'unique' to me. :D

I think I am going to ask for the days off work tomorrow and then pull the trigger if I can get the time off. Hopefully there is ten club tickets left. Anyone interested in my extras if I get them?

I probably am different, have done loads of travelling for my age.

Yeah, the tall buildings were amazing for a whilst, but then again i have seen the pyramids and nothing in the world will ever top that in terms of man made structures and awesomeness. All i gathered really was main NYC was just oversized advertising *cough* times square *cough*. I totally forgot about the hard rock cafe as i usually try to find it in every city i go to, but i saw it times square and was like yeah! Some nice stuff in there.

Someone mentioned here as well about embracing the culture etc, dont see it to be any different from most societies, some very nice people, some dicks. Oh and the food in USA...... Big CHEAP portions :D:D but nothing radically different from here.

I think I'm gonna try and make this happen. Depending on whether or not my boss will let me have the time off. I have been all over the USA, but have never made it to another country besides Canada.

Go for it! You'll have a blast! I did some quick math/research, and quickly realized I couldn't afford it this time. I'd be going with my husband, so everything would be x2. I got up to 3k without even getting to food/lodging, so I knew we were thinking far above our means right now. Maybe next time. But if you have the time/money, you should totally do it! Don't forget to get your passport :) Have fun planning!

the *vibe* of NYC is what it's all about, not simply the tall buildings...and as far as food: it IS radically different from the UK - it tastes great! :D;) haha. seriously tho, i lived in london 1.5 years...and yea, i did discover great food there, but NOTHING in comparison to home. ethnic foods especially - outside of indian - far superior. anyhoo...i've just never heard anyone say that 'over-exposure'; to pics/movies of a place, *ruined* seeing the place in 3D for the first time. i've seen numerous pics/films set in paris and elsewhere....NOTHING compares to first-hand experience imo. and nothing compares to meeting and truly conversing with PEOPLE who LIVE in the places you visit. however, we all *travel* quite differently.

as to the OP and others considering it....again...go for it if you can.....especially if it's your first experience really abroad...sooooo worthy!

I found flights from Kansas City to Rotterdam then from London back to Kansas City for $725 or so. Sounded good to me. First trip to Europe.

ooohhh getting defensive there D2D :D

its not radically different.... radically different would be slow roast lamb cooked on the moon.... its not radically different.

and far superior... i think you missed off 'imo' ... as after all it is only your opinion... and leave I Brisk I to his... he's entitled to it. :)
oh scary... 40000 morbidly obese christians wearing fanny packs invading europe is probably the least scariest thing since I watched an edited version of The Care Bears movie in an extremely brightly lit cinema.

Y'know, I've wanted to go to New York for a few years but could never really justify going. When PJ announced the shows there I jumped at the chance to go! It's a decent excuse aside from 'I just wanna go there'.

Anyway, for those travelling to Europe, it's pretty easy to get around. Flights are cheap from country to country. You can get a flight from New York to Dublin for $353 all in with Aer Lingus on Aug 12th! From there you can get to Amsterdam for €50, or Eindhoven for €40. Btw, I find Amsterdam to be highly over-rated and would go to Eindhoven over it any day! Train or fly to Berlin (flights are about €60). Flight from Berlin to Manchester, €50. Train from Manchester to London, about €20. London to New York, cheapest is €290, direct is about €600.

So, for between €600-€1000 you can travel around :D I've too much time on my hands!

  • Ok so I have a tentative vacation planned for Aug 12-20 so I can hit all 4 dates in Europe. I have been gathering travel information but I can not find any of the cheap flights from Amsterdam to Berlin or from Amsterdam to Manchester. Can anyone point to to the right direction on which airlines or websites to check. Thanks.

I used transavia via ebookers for Amsterdam - Berlin Flights - about £70ish. Originally searched through http://www.kayak.co.uk/ (just checked and flights have gone up to £78).
