Who do these "people" think they are, making people pay "tax" for not being of their religion, and destroying their homes if they don't or can't pay up? How many poor indians/non-muslims can afford 50 MILLION rupees a year for "protection"??

What also worries me is that the Pakistani authorities have just sat back and let these bastards take over parts of their country, and if they take over more they'll eventually (probably) get access to nuclear weapons. :x

These Talibandits have no compunction against throwing acid into schoolgirls' faces to stop them going to school. What chances will the rest of the world have if they get hold of nukes I ask you? :x

These guys are fucked up. This story begs the question... didn't we just step up our troop presence in Afghanistan? What the fuck are we doing there if this kind of thing is going on right under our noses?

Well that's the thing...the focus is always on afghanistan but the Talibastards have moved over in to pakistan and a few months ago took over a huge section called Swat, right near the afghan border. It's been reported by the BBC many times but I don't see anyone doing anything about it. They probably think that since it's contained in Pakistan then that's ok or something.

I mean, in Pakistan, the politicians, army and police just gave up the ghost and let them instigate their own brand of Islamic "justice". Only a few months ago they blew up 160 girls' schools to ensure girls don't get an education and threw acid in their faces, killed "dancing girls" in the city, and killed and maimed dozens of pakistani residents and officials for various reasons, hung their bodies up in the town square and mutilated them, killed policemen, and instigated sharia law to ensure women have to cover up and can't leave the house without a male family escort, or their permission...Now they are making non-muslims in the area pay Jizya tax for not being muslim (even though their families have been there for centuries...) it's totally disgusting but no-one seems to be doing anything about it. :x

Ah, I guess that makes sense. I think we're very very leery about crossing into Pakistan. They're still technically an ally and nuclear capable... we don't want to do anything to tip them over to the extremist side... they're on the edge enough already!

That said, this kind of thing has to be stopped.

the best way to fight the taliban (a blanket term like insurgent or terrorist-in this case describing anyone resisting US occupation)-the best way to fight them is to cut off their funding.

warlords are kicking back hundreds of millions in poppy sales to the taliban, probably the biggest reason they exist.

buy all the poppy from the farmers directly, cut the warlords and taliban out, their funding dries up, they dry up, everyone can go about building the oil pipeline through kandahar, the point of all of this madness.

but naturally the US policy prefers a violent confrontation, it always has the upper hand.

That's the point. They don't care about kids, so they probably won't have any issue with using nukes on the rest of us (to cleanse the world of non-muslims).

The nukes thing is just a fear I have - the pak authorities have not resisted the spread of the taliban in parts of the pakistan (either out of fear of violence or retribution, or because they, or a lot of them, agree with the taliban's interpretation of islam/sharia law). They are starting to resist now but I think there's a lot of confusion going on: http://www.theweek.com/article/index/95 ... n_pushback

This isn't just about the US (Maybe it's not of interest to this board if it isn't?) and not just western nations. It will affect everyone. Funding isn't the only issue - they demanded 50million rupees from poor sikh families - if they can get this then they have other sources of funding.

The only answer is for the UN or something to send in troops to get rid of the taliban. You can't rely on the Pak authorities as there's too many sympathisers in there!
