I Didn't Know I Was Pregnant

did anyone watch this on tv? I think it was on Discovery Health. I watched last night and kept laughing at the narrator. He kept saying, and now she would have to deliver the baby with no medication
Ummm yeah so what's the big deal? For lots of years women have been having babies without the need for an epidural. I had a few of mine with no meds, really it isn't that big of a deal.
They were all making it out to be like something really bad to have to do

Why wouldn't they? It gives them a nice bit of leverage to use on us for the rest of our lives, and an excuse to stop caring about their appearance.

Don't get me wrong, it does hurt, really really bad. But it is one of those pains that you can get past. As cheesy as it sounds with one of my babies I sang PJ songs during contractions.
I just thought it was funny how they kept saying she had to do it with no meds, like it was something no one should ever do. Some of us weirdos choose to not have pain meds :o and some actually have their babies at their own homes :o:lol: I guess it all just seemed funny to me.

Yeah, my girlfriend claims that when she has her first baby, she wants it to be a waterbirth in our tub...

All I could really say was: "So that's not my week to clean the bathroom, right?"

Agreed - its tough, but you handle it. My second one was with no medication. No regrets at all.

add up all the pain from all the times a guy gets sacked, and I bet it's WAY worse than childbirth...

But, hey...this could go on forever....you counter with broken fingernails, we throw in all the times we've had our asses kicked defending your 'honour'... cramps vs bleeding ears...endless, I say!

That's what I was thinking. How do you not know? There are so many signs. I think these women are in serious denial.

Although it's uncommon for women to remain unaware of their pregnancies until they go into labor, it's not all that uncommon for women to not know they're pregnant until well into the pregnancy. I work with pregnant patients and have seen it more often than I would have expected.

We had a patient who came in once thinking she was 5 weeks pregnant & was really 8 months pregnant. Not even the doctors could tell she was that far along until they did the ultrasound. Aside from not looking pregnant, she was a 15-year-old, non-English-speaking, undocumented immigrant who had no one to turn to for help. It can be hard for well-educated, adult women who speak the language and have a strong support system to know their pregnant sometimes. Imagine how much harder it would be if you were young and uneducated, couldn't turn to anyone for advice if your body was changing, couldn't communicate with most of the people around you, didn't have health insurance, didn't have any money, couldn't drive to the doctor's office even if you could find one to see you, and were absolutely terrified of even the thought of being pregnant.

While I think it's more likely for a minor to take longer to become aware of her pregnancy, it happens in grown women as well. I saw an adult woman once who didn't look extremely pregnant to me, but when I put my hand on her stomach I could feel the baby moving. She said she had felt it but thought it was gas or something. Because of the birth control she was on, she not only didn't get her period - so she never missed it - but she really thought she couldn't be pregnant so other explanations for body changes seemed more plausible.

Some women get pregnant after they've had their tubes tied. They sure don't suspect pregnancy if/when their body starts changing. Some women who have never been pregnant aren't familiar enough with the signs of pregnancy to recognize them right away. Some don't have have such obvious signs of pregnancy. I have a friend who's term right now and she's only gained 8 pounds! Sometimes pregnancy tests give false negatives. Some women are misdiagnosed. Etc., etc.

My point is... anything's possible; I don't think we should be so quick to judge the women for not knowing.

Kinda like exaggerating the pain of a kidney stone.

That show terrifies me. Every time I hear a story like that, I panic a little bit inside. I want to have another baby, but I need a little time to prepare for it!

Just for the record, contractions hurt like a bastard...and you can't possible comment on it unless you've experienced it! ;) I was completely terrified of getting an epidural, so I decided I'd just wait and see how bad it hurt. Well, once it started to hurt really bad, I was totally ok with a dude sticking a needle into my spinal cord. :D

i wasn't trying to pass judgment on them at all. i've only seen the show once or twice, and it just floored me that they didn't know at all. but you're right...everyone's different & everyone's bodies react in their own way. i just hope we know & aren't "surprised" when we find out that my wife is 7 months along!

Oh, my post was more in response to PJGARDEN's. I agree that the stories are amazing; I'm just not so quick to blame it on denial.

Here's hoping that you know about all of your children well in advance of their births! :D

medically they say the only male equivalent is passing a stone.

hmmm dont know but I have heard pretty macho men scream over that.

getting sacked in football? are you kiddin' me?????????????????????? You try passing 9 pounds through one of your bodily holes!!!!!!!!

It is painful but we all get over it because we get such an incredible reward.
