I just watched this movie. I thought It was the best film I've seen in a long time. Sean Penn was superb - at least as good, and if not better, than, his performance in 'I am Sam'.

I'm not a big fan of actors, but Sean Penn is a top grade fucking dude.

I LOVED this movie. Excellent performances all around, but Sean Penn was gold. I've noticed many people being picky and judging with Sean Penn. A lot of people I have asked don't like him but can't provide a good reason. I on the other hand think he's a terrific actor.

I love the films he's directed aswell, in particular; 'The Indian Runner', 'The Crossing Guard', and another film about some kid and a bear, or something ;)

I first heard about Harvey Milk through the Dead Kennedy's album 'Give Me Convenience Or Give Me Death'. The vinyl L.P included a pull-out booklet which had an article on the assassination of Harvey Milk by Dan White. The song 'I fought the law' was based on this incident.

'Drinkin’ beer in the hot sun
I fought the law and I won
I needed sex and I got mine
I fought the law and I won

The law don’t mean shit if you’ve got the right friends
    That’s how the country’s run
Twinkies are the best friend I’ve ever had
    I fought the law
    And I won

I blew George & Harvey’s brains out with my six-gun
I fought the law and I won
Gonna write my book and make a million
I fought the law and I won

I’m the new folk hero of the Ku Klux Klan
My cop friends think that’s fine
You can get away with murder if you’ve got a badge
    I fought the law
    And I won
    I am the law
    So I won'

  • I saw this movie a while ago and absolutely loved it. Especially the end, the wake with all those candles...it gave me the chills.
I had to get used to Penn playing a gay man though. But he did a great job, as did Emile.

saw this finally last week, i really liked it too. growing up in the bay area i knew a lot about harvey already, and i liked how they mixed old footage with new. i read an article in the chronicle about how they went to the old camera shop he owned (now a gift shop) and recreated everything to look just like it did back then. his old friends cried when they saw it, it was like going back in time for them.

actually drove past when they were filming the scene where they marched to city hall one evening!

sean did a great job as usual, glad he won the oscar :)

it's truly AMAZING when you think about it.
we sure do have a looooonnnngggggg way to go in many respects, but it's still amazing. i think back to my parents and all they have lived through/seen, the changes.....utterly staggering!

as to the film, i was simply blown away by all the performances, and thought the story really did justice to the man, and the cause. and not simply the homosexual cause, but overall, the cause of equal rights for all. just.....so.....well......done.

O.k, just tone down the melodrama a notch. Thanks.

I enjoyed Milk too, great movie, Sean deserved his second Oscar.

But to tap on what Indifference71 stated, yes, attitudes were barbarian back then, but sadly, they still continue to be.

See Prop 8 in California, of all fucking places. It's a travesty that as Milk was out in theaters rallying about winning Prop 6, MOST Californian's still think gay people are second/third class citizens and don't have a right to marry, because "God" says so. The fuck?

really one of the best movies (if not best) I've seen this year! :D and I've watched a LOT of movies. ;)

the only thing I didn't like was how long it took Sean Penn/Harvey to fall on the floor after he was shot. :? a tiny thing, and definitely meaningless when it comes to the big picture.

the wake with the people, the candles - amazing moment.

i thought that was all slo-mo....you know, purposeful? thus how i saw it anyway, especially looking out at the tosca poster and all. that whole idea of your life ending, in a split-second...but that second lasting a loooooonnnnnnggggg time. just what i thought anyway.

yes, of course, you're probably right. and that's all fine and fair enough. but personally I felt like it was a second or two too long. no matter though, ruined nothing. :)

well i certainly didn't mean to imply your thoughts were *wrong*...not at all! was simply sharing my perspective on the scene, and i actually like it....a lot. just goes to show, differing tastes. but you bet, great film. glad it didn't ruin it for you though, i hate when there's something just 'off' or the wee bit unbelievable in an otherwise stellar flick, b/c it does normally take away from it a bit. seeing it 2x, definitely reinforces me just how well-done it was....such a timely subject.....and really amazing performances from all involved.

On the topic of gays and gay rights, our society has shown very little improvement...

If anyone lives in Utah, they know exactly what I mean. Do I need to mention Chris Buttars? I just don't understand the infernal hatred for gays...what does it matter how someone else lives there life. And the religion argument? Give me a fucking break. Organized religion is a crock, so how can you use that to discriminate against someones life-style when yours is often veiwed as just as fucked up because you judge them by a belief system you consider tangible.

i don't get it...but maybe I'm just one of those crazies from the new generation.

I'd prefer to say NO improvement, but I know there would've been some backlash for that. I just don't consider sitcoms about gays improvement. Hate crimes are still a reality, along with the neglect of civil rights.

It's assanine to deny people partnership because it's immoral...who says, the bible? A piece of holy literature which the whole world does NOT live there lives by? If you're going to deny gays marriage, then we might as well outlaw inter-racial couples, right? Let's not pick and choose which civil rights we'd like to acknowledge. If we're going to piss on one of them, piss on them all.

I hope one day people will realize that not everyone lives by the bible, or religion for that matter.

said it better than i could...

i always find it funny when people want to infer liberalism and say "the left coast" and yet iowa, middle america if there ever was, allows gays the rights they should have and leftist, commie california doesn't...except for la and sf, this is a pretty conservative state...hence our governor

Well, I am just going to have to rent this movie by myself I guess. I've wanted to see it for ages and never got a chance. It was showing in my town for like 1 week and now my husband isn't that interested in it although I'm guessing it's the kind of movie he'd like if he saw it.

I remember when Milk and Moscone were killed and how shocking it was. But I really have an interest in the story because I've met one of the people portrayed in it, Cleve Jones, several times. He founded the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt and I used to do a lot of volunteer work for that organization. I've heard him speak very movingly about Harvey Milk and how he was influenced by him. So I can't believe that I still haven't seen this movie.

    Well said dude.
  • I wasnt impressed.

I have said before, and will say it again, sean penn is one of those actors who deserves to have his movies checked out by everyone reguardless of reviews. That said, his work in the past is so much more powerful than this film. Into the Wild was mindblowing. 21 grams was mindblowing. Hurly Burly was mindlowing. dead man Walking was mindblowing. Casualties of War-mindblowing.

He didnt become Harvey in the movie. His performance was subpar.

He is capable of making and being in some life changing films. This movie was just not one of them.
