I had a song that I downloaded from the internet and saved to my desktop. Then I imported the song into itunes. I deleted the song from my desktop and it was deleted from itunes. Does anyone know why this is? When you import songs from a cd and take the cd out the songs stay on itunes.

this is kind of hard to answer in a few words... but.. it's because your songs are not actually IN itunes they are in a folder on your computer...

To explain a little better... itunes looks in that folder to get the music... when you listen to a song in itunes it grabs it from that folder... if you were to delete that folder all of your music in your itunes would be gone...

so when you played that song on your desktop itunes was grabbing it from your desktop, when you deleted it, it no longer could find the song...

your best bet is to go into preferences in itunes and find out where your songs are being stored and whenever you want to add a song like you did before, drop it in that folder so it won't be deleted....

this is also why when you delete a song from your library itunes will also ask if you want it to be deleted from your computer.

    hope that helps.
  • now.. you CAN have it happen that it'll copy into your iTunes folder so you can delete it from your desktop.

Go to iTunes>Preferences>Advanced and click the "copy files to iTunes Music folder."

Interesting. While we're talking about itunes I wonder if anyone had a problem where itunes was making duplicates of songs downloaded? I just recently cleared about 3gb of duplicate songs from my folders because I used to move songs I'd downloaded into a folder called "unsorted" in my itunes folder, with the intention of sorting them out myself. But I didn't notice that Itunes was also new folders under the artists' name (I have a lot of artists in my folders, lol), with a copy of the song. I don't know if it's possible to change that option, I can't see it anyway.

Leave that folder out of iTunes and then import them as you wish. If you want to add info you can add info to them within iTunes.
