I think it would be cool to have a thread to share ideas, patterns and what not. I know there is the art forum... But I find that it's more for displaying then discussion.

I used to be an avid sewer but since moving my sewing space is full of boxes. I'm looking for some new ideas to spark my creative juices. Anyone care to share :)

funny, it seems you and i have a similar education trajectory. i started in fashion (merchandising & marketing, not design) got an associate's degree......went on to a bachelor's tostudy interior design, then switchedmy major to fine art's education, got my BFA.....started teaching art - taught a decade, went to grad school, got my MA in photography. now i work in accounting. :P haha. bizarre.....

anyhoo....i can barely sew on a button, which is a tragedy really b/c my mother was THE more excellent seamstress. she made loads of our clothes when we were kids, she made my senior prom dress, the gown she wore to my wedding, just beautiful work. she kntis, crochets, needlepoints....but sadly, she's a real shit teacher. :?

i'm really not all that 'crafty' either, but i did go thru a wee crafty stage i guess. i used to paint these little wooden boxes, birdhouses, etc.....when i look back i cannot believe i had the patience, gave most away.....but i still have a few floating about. also did some decoupage, but maybe 1-2 things.

pure art, and design - as in interiors, gardens, love it! - was always my thing. i used to draw, draw, draw as a child/teen....but as i got older, photography became my true passion. i do still have a darkroom in my basement but i admit, i mostly just shoot digital nowadays....and mostly for my own enjoyment. and yes.....i love doing things in my home and garden, and helping others too.
    Stay with me...

I am myself like you somehow

  • I used to make clothes... not so much nowadays cuz my machine isn't too chipper but I still love to customise t-shirts

I also consider myself an artist... ish. I like to draw and paint anyways...

Pictures can be posted if you want to see owt.
Been to this many PJ shows: Reading 2006 London 2007 Manchester & London 2009 Dublin, Belfast, London, Nijmegen & Berlin 2010 Manchester 1 & Manchester 2 2012...

... and I still think Drive-By Truckers are better.

Wow we do have a similar background... I started with cosmetology school, and finished....worked a bit and hated it. Then got an associates in fashion design...I am now a few credits away from having a bachelors of science (it's an architecture school) in interior design (though I had to stop cause of the upheaval in my life....and I'm glad since I hate CAD!!) And as you know I'm applying for a fine arts degree in elementary art education....and very excited about it!!

As for sewing and crafts... I've always done them, even my (as you say) 'pure art' is collage (which has a craftier side to it), though I do paint and do photography as well. I carry a sketch book everywhere and even now while I'm at work (I'm by myself today) I'm sketching. I suppose sewing came easy to me because my grandmother was a seamstress... And my father is also a great at sewing (believe it or not). I've made things and altered everything I have worn for every large occasion... Stemming from xmas as a child to my wedding (which I just about made everything for... And had many people ask me to do things for their weddings as well).

So I don't know where I was going with this since the store got busy! LOL

So um yeah....crafting is fun! :D

    oooooooooooo....collage!
    i LOVE collage!
was always one of my most fave things to teach/do!
matisse is such an excellent example of collage as fantastic art!

i was never the 'carry a sketchbook' type....i always drew at home. i do the odd thing now and again, but yes...photography is *the* thing for me.
    Stay with me...
