Pearl Jam Has Spoiled Me!!!!!

So I went to two non-PJ shows in the past week and a half and in both shows, and both headliners only played for about an hour a half. Both only had one encore. I was like "WTF???!!! That's it????" Both shows were great and all, but why so short? I went to the shows with two different people and they thought an hour and a half was pretty decent- but when you have a band like PJ play for two and a half hours- pretty much EVERY night then I don't see why other bands can even attempt this.

Just another reason why I LOVE Pearl jam!!!!

I often feel this way when seeing other acts.... I've learned that if I go into the show expecting it to be short, I'm never disappointed, but sometimes surprised.
  • I feel this way too...

MMJ does a pretty good job at their shows. They may not always have multiple encores, but they typically play some serious sets.

For me, nothing exemplifies Pearl Jam's greatest during a live show more than Bonnaroo 2008. It was an absolutely brilliant performance, worth every second of the 3 hours I waited in line, got 3rd row without having to worry about seniority, and they played a very wide range of songs. Had never heard 1/2 full live, and although it's my least favorite song on Riot Act, it was pretty good live. And then to top it all off, they end with All Along the Watchtower, which, at 1:00 am, after a 3 hour set and me having been dehydrated for the past 2 1/2 hours anyways, was just absolutely brilliant.

For me, it's the fans, and Pearl Jam's reaction to them, that makes the show special.

A commenter on the BrooklynVegan blog nailed it writing about the MSG 2008 shows:

"I don't really consider myself a die-hard fan...I mean, I like Pearl Jam as much as the next guy who stopped listening to them after "Vitalogy"...but man, they rocked the SHIT out of the Garden that first night.

They really do have the greatest fans in the world. Call them frat boys, tools or whatever you want...they fucking love that band. And although you wouldn't think it, that fact alone makes a Pearl Jam concert such an amazing experience (particularly at a venue like MSG). If you didn't get the chance to see them, I would highly recommend checking them out next time they come through town. It's worth it."
"They said ... timing was everything
made him ... want to be everywhere
there's a ... lot to be said for nowhere."

I saw Disturbed on the Music as a Weapon Tour and then Seether last night. I was hoping Seether would play Immortality last night- which really got me into the band- but they didn't. The covers they played were Nutshell and Careless Whisper. Great show though. And I agree with someone that posted a few post above, the setlists that PJ creates each night does rock. Both Disturbed and Seether- and I know a lot of other bands do this too- play their hits and then a few songs off their album. We truly are lucky to be PJ fans

I just saw KOL in Boston last Sunday....I wasn't impressed...I didn't have the best seats...plus it was at a college arena. All of the girls were dressed like they were going clubbing and the guys looked like the stepped out of an Abercrombie catalog (not that this was a bad thing) The show was ho-hum...we left early...

I feel totally spoiled by PJ....I leave each and every show I have ever been to, sweaty, ears ringing, with no voice left! Plus 10c seats are pretty sweet!

Can't wait for the tour!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm so proud to be a PJ fan...their shows are untouchable by anyone else. I've seen some pretty damn good bands and excellent shows...but nothing stands up to PJ...they never fail to impress, and rock my fucking face off.

They play for HOURS, do multiple encores and play rarities, and if you're a true, die-hard fan who can sing to every song word for word, you know what the songs mean and what they're about and why there were written then you can truly understand the intimacy of a Pearl Jam concert.

If someone says they don't like PJ, you take them to a show, and yet they still don't like them afterwards...well, then there is no hope for that sorry soul...

Damn, I was all pumped for KOL at the Spectrum in Philly this Saturday, they usually do 1 encore, and they ripped every time I've seen them!

I know what you mean. I was at Saturday's show and there was a couple in front of me making out pretty much the whole show. Barely even looked at the stage at all. Not to mention everyone around me was about 10 years younger than me and were texting with their Blackberrys and iphones. Let's just say I felt very out of place. Not taking anything away from the band though. Pesonally I thought they put on a hell of a show, obviously shorter than PJ, but good nonetheless.

Yea I'm sort of the same way, except ive only seen PJ twice so im hardly spoiled.

I remember Incubus having the shortest set, like 1.5 hrs. I was like its over? nahh they must do another set.

Scratch that..... Primus.......9 songs.... about an hour. Glad I was able to catch them but WTF? Its like why bother reuniting for a tour when you clearly dont like your band mates anymore.

I definitely agree with you on that. Besides my love for their music and they energy of their shows, the anticipation of what song will be played next is really exciting to me. Yeah, there's some staples, but on the whole they do a tremendous job making every show unique. I love the buildup to the first song - what will they open up with?

Most bands you can predict the entire setlist. So, for me, there's really no need to see those type of bands more than once per tour.
