Rearviewmirror (Greatest Hits): what's different?

I never picked this up. I didn't see the point. I already own all the albums and went through the trouble to hunt down everything else. Now that Ten Redux is out my interest in hearing the "Alive," "Once," and "Black (*edit*)" remixes on this thing is pretty much nil. But I just read in another thread that there was a lyrical change in "Who You Are." If this is true, what other differences are there between the original versions and the versions on Rearviewmirror? Can anyone detail them? Thanks.

just off the top of my head....

the dirty frank on there is different... they leave out some of the ranting ed does in the middle

the 3 songs off of ten are different than the remixes that came on Ten Redux... slightly.

the state of love and trust is different than the singles version.... slightly, again. some weird flanger effect right before the solo

the version of brother on there is instrumental... and inferior, i might add.

there's the "secret" layne tribute song on the end... you might have found this elsewhere, but i hadn't heard it before. it s just ok.

all in all, if you've gone this long without hearing it... i say you keep on keeping on. you CAN live without it.

Of the top of my head - Alive, Once and Black are different to the redux versions, once has no master/slave intro so just goes straight into it, black is also better than the redux version me thinks, all of em have been mixed slightly differently. Also different beginning to Animal (bit of feedback), lyric change in Who You Are, and of course State of Love and Trust with a wierd echoey sound (not my favourite version). I think thats it.

edit - o! and even flow & jeremy are the single versions not the album versions.

Hahaha, dude, you have me mentally jumping through albums, and now I have a headache

Although I already had all the Pearl Jam albums, my brother got my the greatest hits for me anyways, and I actually really enjoy the album. It serves as a sort of "playlist" in a sense that while I'm driving I don't have to keep changing cd's to listen to songs from different eras. Also, I didn't have SOLAT, Breath, I Got Id, and the non-live version of Man of the Hour at the time, so getting those songs on it alone were worth the album. The artwork and pictures in the booklet are pretty cool. At least go to your local library and check out the album or something, give it a listen. I do recommend it for some of the b-sides, though few, and especially for the photos.

The solo to Alive on RVM goes horribly out of sync towards the end, I can't listen to it... pretty big f*ck up that.

i dont know how different it is, but the rvm version of even flow is my fave, better than redux for me
  • All the above, plus "Even Flow," which is the radio edit (the "Waaaah!" starting it off, deeper & richer guitars, more power after the bridge)

It sounds like people generally have a pretty positive opinion of most of the material on the greatest hits. And from what I can tell its because the material is not only songs we know and love, but more so because there are enough variations (however sleight) in the songs to hold peoples interests. Does this seem accurate? Or do people think that since I've already gone 7 years without hearing any of these that they're pretty nonessential? From what I can tell the version of Even Flow is the one listed as "Even Flow (rerecorded)" already released on a single, and the same one used in the video. Just wondering.
