One of the best songs ever written IMO.

Does anyone know why they changed the lyrics to "avalanche, falling fast" from "circumstance, clapping hands".

I don't mind either version but preferred the original lyrics...

i specifically remember him singing "avalance, falling fast" when i saw them on the '96 tour in charlotte, right after 'no code' came out.

i guess they had the two versions all along, and for whatever reason, they chose 'circumstance...' for the album.

Im listening to the Charlotte show from 96.. he's says Circumstance. He only says "falling fast", maybe that's what you remember.

That's true - maybe they liked both lyrics and decided to use them both. Interesting!

If I were to hazard a guess, the "avalanche" line might have originated from a revised sequencing of No Code based on the description provided by the link below.

"Gateway Mastering Studios CD-R from June 25, 1996. Track 3, Who You Are, has an alternate lyric in the third verse."

So it was probably a last minute swap.

Makes me think my theory of the avalanche version being marked as the “final” mix on the tapes (and is why it was used for RVM and the vinyl reissue), has some legs to it.
